Show Ryegrass Planting Brings Fine Results Last winter, under the direction of the Soil Conservation service technicians, Dan Seegmiller planted plant-ed one acre of Italian ryegrass, (seed procured from the Soil Conservation Con-servation service nursery in Albuquerque) Albu-querque) to use as a green manure man-ure crop on some heavy alkali land. By early spring the crop looked so well he decided to let it grow to pasture it. By late spring, he was so well pleased with it that he decided to save it and cut seed to use on more of his salt grass pasture land. At present the crop resembles a good grain crop in height and volume vol-ume and is getting near the ripening ripen-ing stage. Wallace Iverson, Lower Virgin-Santa Virgin-Santa Clara Soil Conservation district dis-trict supervisor has expressed the desire for the district to harvest the seed on a share basis. In this manner, they would be able to get wider distribution of the seed within the district. Mr. Seegmiller believes that this grass, when grown on salt grass pasture land, will at least double the carrying capacity of those lands which will result m material increase in beef production produc-tion at this critical time. |
