Show Dixie High Flyers Beat Cedar City In 'Crucial Game' At State Casaba Tournament Coach Lee Hafen's Dixie Flyers won from their rivals from Cedar City, but lost in their other' two starts at the state basketball tournament last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Dixie's representatives representa-tives thus gained sixth place in the meet. The Flyers started well against Letii on Thursday, taking an 8-1 kad at the quarter, but the all-state all-state center, Don Dorton, throwing throw-ing them in with either hand with equal skill, went on a scoring sPree, and the Pioneers were ahead 34-28 as the gun went off. The Pioneers were also "on" in their foul pitching, sinking 10 out of 14. Di-ie-Cedar Game "A Natural" The Dixie-Cedar City game was a "natural". It was described by some as the best game of the tourney. The teams played on even terms, with Dixie holding a small lead most of the way. The Flyers got as far as seven points ahead, with the Redmen closing the gap to two points with a determined de-termined last-quarter rally. The game ended 43-41 for Dixie. The Monroe Rams were not merely "hot" in the consolation finals on Saturday night; they were "torrid". They just couldn't miss from any angle, and the Flyers could do nothing about it. It was a walkaway until the last quarter, when Dixie closed the gap to 43-31. The Dixie boys played good ball throughout the meet and deserve a great deal of credit for what they accomplished. In meets such as this teams have their ups and downs, and the Flyers had their "downs" twice. During these two games, also, their opponents had their "ups". And that's basketball. basket-ball. Coach Hafen developed a smooth-playing team and deserves a lot of credit for his excellent (Continued on page eight) State Tournament (Continued from first page) coaching. As usual, the boys were very popular with the fans. Wins All-State Selection Darrel Hafen won a guard position po-sition on the "B" team all-state five, as selected by the Salt Lake Tribune. Norman Hafen placed as a guard on the second five, as named by the Deseret News. All of the starting five received honorable hon-orable mention on the News team. Darrel, with Russell Neilson and Austin Gentry, were among the high scorers of the meet. |
