Show Democrats Report Complete Harmony At Meet Evan J- Woodbury Elected Democratic County Chairman for Next Term Complete harmony characterized Ihe Washington county Democratic Demo-cratic convention held in St. George Saturday afternoon, May 6 jore than 60 delegates attended at-tended from all parts of the county. Highlights of political controversy which will attend the !944 campaign were aired briefly by several speakers. Record of ,l,e past 12 years of Democratic administration in county, state and na,ion was offered as sound reason rea-son for continuing this party m power with the assurance that the policies and practices will continue con-tinue to be for the benefit of all of the people. Attorney Ballif Speaks Attorney George Ballif of Provo who accompanied Rodney A. Ash-by, Ash-by, county chairman, to St. George gave the convention address. ad-dress. Winning of the war, winning win-ning of the peace, and the postwar post-war rehabilitation of 11 million men who will return from the battle fronts,, were stressed by Mr. Ballif as the sound platform (Continued on page four) Democratic Convention (Continued from first page) of the Democratic party campaign. Both parties, he said, were agreed on the winning of the war. but differed in their reactions on the other two issues. Half truths, he stated, were being used to poison the minds of the people, and there must be a nation-wide educational edu-cational program that will give the true picture. The security of America was ruined following World War One, declared the speaker, because the administration of that period sought immediate return to normalcy, nor-malcy, and forgot the men who fought the battles. Restoration of the people was the promise made good by the Democratic administration, adminis-tration, in what has been styled the New Deal, he declared. "What part of the New Deal would the opposition dispense with?" he asked: "Federal Housing, Farm Security, Old Age Benefits or Corporation Laws?" He hailed the Lend-Lease as International cooperation, and said that Wendell Willkie visualized visual-ized the world under such a program pro-gram and his party deserted him. He also said that the soldier vote issue is obvious . because the op-postion op-postion has reason to fear it. He also made many other points on the campaign issues. Regarding the Montgomery Ward situation, Mr. Ballif said the Smith-Connoll measure, passed over the President's veto, was designed to develop just such situations. sit-uations. Before . their hand was called under the provisions of that measure, Montgomery Ward obtained ob-tained priorities and concessions under claim of being essential to war industry. Today, they reverse their claim to suit their purpose. Rodney Ashby Presides Rodney Ashby presided at the meeting and was unanimously made permanent member of the Washington county Democratic committee.V Evan J. Woodbury succeeds Mr. Ashby as county chairman. Mrs. Roxey S. Romney was re-elected vice-chairman and Miss Alice Pendleton is the secretary. secre-tary. All went in by acclamation. A central committee was elected with T. Wendell Bayles and Ervin Milne, central district; Vaughn Jones and Grant Langston, west district; Lor in D. Squire and Lawrence Kleinman from the east district. Responses were made by Chairman Chair-man Woodbury, Mrs. Romney, Commissioner W a Id en Ballard; Representative E. S. Gardner and others on the soundness of the Democratic party. Attorney E. J. Pickett said, "We are approaching approach-ing one of the most crucial periods in history, and may expect one of the most bitter and vindictive campaigns since the second election elec-tion of Abraham Lincoln. He urged the party to sand fearlessly united for those principles which will protect the land for which the sons of America are now fighting. |
