Show Proposed Cuts In Stock And Deer on Dixie Opposed By Game Group Recommendations of the Forest Service representatives that livestock live-stock on the Dixie National forest, for-est, (Dixie division) be reduced 28 per cent during the coming season, was strongly opposed by the St. George Federation of Sportsmen, when the two groups met at the Liberty hotel Friday, May 5th. The Forest Service representatives rep-resentatives also urged that 1000 head of hornless deer be removed from the area this coming hunting season, 500 from the Blake and Gubler ranch and the Veyo section sec-tion and 500 from the Pinto area. This suggestion also met opposition. opposi-tion. Jos. J. Milne, president of the St. George Federation of Sportsmen, Sports-men, said that organization would not favor such a reduction, as it would materially upset the economic eco-nomic balance within Washington county. The problem was discussed discus-sed pro and con, with no definite action being taken at this meeting. meet-ing. The Forest Service may, however, arbitrarily make the reduction, re-duction, it is understood. After some discussion a : tenta-(Con'tinued tenta-(Con'tinued on page five) Game Officials Meet (Continued from first page) tive figure of 8,000 head was set as the carrying capacity of the range for deer, which was agreed to by Mr. Milne. However, the State Fish and Game representatives representa-tives felt this tenative figure was too low. Recommendations of the removal of 1000 head of hornless deer was made in the face of the fact that such a reduction would immediately reduce the tentative figure of 8,000, it was pointed out. The big game count this spring showed an estimated herd of 7,850 deer, which is less than 50 per cent of the herd estimated to be on the range in 1941. The meeting was called by the U. S. Forest Service for the purpose pur-pose of formulating a game and range management program on the Dixie National forest. In attendance at-tendance from the Forest Service, were Orange Olsen, assistant regional reg-ional director; Albert Albertson, supervisor of the Dixie National forest; Mr. Phinney, range manager; man-ager; and Irwin Johnson, local manager. Newell R. Frei, Allen Randall and Vernon Leavitt, represented rep-resented the State Fish and Game department. Also present were J. Lawrence Wadsworth, president of the Washington County Wild Life Federation; Bruce Snow, E. S. Gardner, Guy Hafen and Archie Gubler of the Cattlemen's association; Mr. House of the Grazing Service, and Jos. J. Milne. Oppose Hornless Deer Removal Both Mr. Milne of the local federation and Mr. Randall of the State Fish and Game, opposed the removal of hornless deer except ex-cept in isolated areas, and in limited numbers after a study of the range this summer showed that the areas were over-grazed. |
