Show Thoughts On Armistice Day Armistice Day this year focuses the attention of the nation on the fact that the last war did not end war. It brings to light the thought that war will not be ended until the people of the world can forget nationalism and petty jealousies. So long as peoples are taught that their nation is better than others, there will continue to be conflict. Armistice Day this year reminds us of the need for peace and tranquillity within this nation, as well as the world. At this time nations should determine to submerge differences based on conflicting aims and interests, and think in terms of the welfare of the entire world. It is time to remember that America was not built by one or many separate groups, but by the people as a whole; a time to recall that public office remains a public trust, and that good citizenship entails responsibilities no less significant. It has been said that America was a great land when Columbus discovered it. It became a great nation when the American people made it one. Armistice Day programs are taking on a different note from a few years ago. At that time we gloried in the idea that this nation had helped to win the war for democracy now we begin to wonder. That our boys helped win the war, there can be no doubt, but it was from the basis of the settlement that a great deal of the trouble of the world today has been brought about. Today practically every nation of the world is re-arming as fast as it is physically and financially possible. It is being done with the thought that only through the protection protec-tion of great armies and navies can a nation be secure. Others preach the thought that through international fellowship fel-lowship and education, peace could be brought about. They say that if you know any one, or with nations, any people well enough, there will be no desire for war. What is the final answer? One man's guess is about as good as another's, but it is a well known fact that when nations create armies there comes a desire to use that army. We think that ours is being built only for protection, but each nation is sold on that idea. One thing is sure and that is that the nation where the people have a free press and the free right of speech, that nation at least has a better opportunity of knowing more of what it is all about. |
