Show THE COMING ELECTION In looking over the candidates for various offices in the county we have come to the conclusion that some very capable men are seeking office. They are a far cry from the old style of political office holder. As a whole the trend is toward younger men. Men who have had special training for the officer they are seeking. This, we believe, be-lieve, is fine, but there are certain offices, such as state and national, where an older and more experienced head is advisable. Particularly is this true where the present office holder has proven himself capable and by his having held the office he has built up connections and prestige. Some people are advocating that we dispense with our political parties. We do not believe that this would be wise. Opposition is essential to popular government and to constructive service thereunder. In the thumb worn book of experience there are many chapters to read over with profit. When political powers remain too long in power, corruption develops. Members of unwieldly majorities ma-jorities get to quarreling among themselves. Personalities take the place of issues. Voters are confused, misled, kept in ignorance. himself alone or for the caramels he brings and the pros-phase pros-phase of every issue should be carefuly considered. Thus with parties all sides are propounded and an opportunity is given for the public to choose that which it thinks is best. As Lincoln said, they may be fooled part of the time, but not all of the time. The past few years voters have taken an unprecedented interest in policies of the government. The depression has proven a blessing in disguise in weeding out the grafts and corruption that had crept into politics. During the days When everyone was making plenty of money no one paid any attention to the way that the tax money was being spent, but with the depression de-pression many of the useless expenditures and down right graft has been eliminated. Many adjustments, alignments and developments are being written into the programs of the parties. It is to be hoped that the battles will be fought on clean ground. In any event we welcome the battle between the different parties. Opposition is necessary to prolong the life of our republic. |
