Show State ot Utah Starts Oil Surfacing Work On City Streets Grading and surfacing operations opera-tions are now under way to oil Main street for three blocks commencing com-mencing at the state highway and thence south to 2nd South. A strip of road twenty feet wide is to be laid by the state, reports Mayor John T. Woodbury, Jr. Some resurfacing will also be done at this time on the state highway, states the Mayor. The above work is to be paid for by the state. At the same time, the Mayor reports that an effort is being made by the Lions club to get the businessmen on Main street to agree to furnish the necessary money to oil the street from curb to curb. The Lions club members po.intt out that while the state has the equipment equip-ment here the cost would be much less and it affords an opportunity op-portunity that should not be overlooked. over-looked. The paving would be tapered out from the isame thickness thick-ness as the highway at the center to approximately two inches at the curbs. It is the further hope and desire de-sire of the City Council and businessmen bus-inessmen on Tabernacle street that they will be able to oil that street from the point where it leaves the highway to where it rejoins. This would be a twenty foot strip with the exception of two blocks down town where -it is hoped that it could be of from curb to curb. "It is estimated," esti-mated," states the Mayor, "that with the preliminary work that has been done, this oiling could j be completed for approximately $5,000. Several plans are being considered by which this money could be raised since it is generally gener-ally conceeded that this is an opportunity op-portunity that should not be pass-' pass-' ed by. i When questioned as to why the ; state would not furnish the nec-' nec-' essary funds to oil Tabefrnacle street, Mayor Woodbury reported 'that the state will not pave two ; streets that paralell each other, : since it is the state's contention that they would be duplicating their work. The reason that Main street is to be oiled by the state is that it is designated as the highway that will eventually con-j con-j nect Southern Utah with Kingman, King-man, Arizona. Mayor Woodbury stressed the fact that immediate action will be neoessary if oiling, other than that outlined by the state road department is to be done. "Businessmen "Busi-nessmen and property owners must come to an agreement as to j what they want if they are to profit pro-fit by having the state's equip-' equip-' ment here at this Jtima," said Mayor Woodbury. |
