If you will look to the men who have made the greatest great-est success in this world, you will find it is the honest men. It is a necessary part of character building that you respect them as it ever was. It is just as fundamental fun-damental to be virtuous as it ever was. "The work of the church might bo classified into two classes, lirst should le leaching the goipel, and second, helping the members o-f tho church. As far as th-j stakes are concerned the first is already taken care of. It is not our business to dictate to the missionaries. "In regard to the second, the church is organized to help perfect per-fect the lives of its members. It is our belief that the church is the most perfect organization organiza-tion for the taking care of the needs of the people of any organization or-ganization in the world. As you know, it is planned to care for the spiritual needs of the people peo-ple from the time they are four years old until they have reached reach-ed the grave. We have the Sunday Sun-day school, M. I. A., Primary, Boy Scouts and church Fchools. If there is any fault with the results it is not the fault of the church. Under ideal conditions, if boys and girls attend the meetings meet-ings wliich have been planned for them, just how much time would they spend under the influence in-fluence of the gospel? In some cases the church does not have any of the members any of the time. "It is true that the officers of the church have been charged charg-ed to see that no iniquity exists in the church. If we find our brother in error, we are to help him. I believe we are held accountable ac-countable if we fail to do our duty. But we alone are helpless to do it all. Just where does the great responsibility lie? I cannot get away from the fact that the fault, if wrong is done, lies with the parents. "If parents could appreciate the need of right training for children just learning to talk, and become independent, a great deal of the problem would be solved. If parents would correct Ml i 1 rl van fnv cinnll tl-iintro -n-liilo they are very young, they would not go astray when older in life. "It seems to me that if we ns paernts lived the gospel as we should we would not have so many of our young boys and girls using tobacco and liquor. If we practiced the gospel in our homes, more of our young boys and girls would be true and virtuous. "There are many good men and women in this church who have ,sons- and daughters who make mistakes, still I am of the opinion that if we would do our duty there would be fewer boys and girls who take up bad habits. hab-its. "We have the responsibility of teaching our children to walk uprightly before God. We must strive to do cur full duty to our children. Do not expect too much of the church, for if a parent is not living a religious life we cannot expect much from the hoys and girls. "What can the church do for a parent? The principles of right living are the same today as I they were a tneusand years ago. j Some time ago the church was : criticised for not bringing a new thought to light in the last 2 5 j years; but after all, is it neces-i neces-i sary? We have more truth to-' to-' day than many of us live up to. Some people in the church are only hike warm because some of : the officers are not what they ! ouyht to be. Just as soon as traveling people enter the valley they see that temple, a monument to the devotion of the Latter-Day Saints." Benediction was pronounced by Levi Harmon. |
