Show STAKE INVITED TO ENTER FINAL MUSKJH Ladies' Chorus and Stake Orchestra Will Go to Salt Lake Friday to Compete in the M. I. A. Contests The St. George stake will be represented by the orchestra and ladies' chorus at the general conference con-ference at Salt Lake City Saturday Sat-urday and Sundav. The orchestra, orches-tra, directed by Earl J. Bl"ak. is entered en a stake basis. Tho ladies' chorus is from the St. George South ward under the direction di-rection of Miss Evelyn Thurston. To receive an invitation to participate in the final contest this year is an unusual honor, inasmuch as the method used for selecting the winners was change from other contests. The entire church of 14 4 stakes was divided into 14 divisions. At the stake honor days the best of the various wards were chosen to compete with the winners of other stakes in the division. The honor day for this district was held at Cedar City, and participated partici-pated in by representatives of Beaver, Parowan, Zion Park, Kanab, St. George and Moapa stakes. The judges for the division events were W. O. Robinson, field secretary of the M. I. A. for the dance and drama; Edward Ed-ward P. Kimball, Salt Lake tab-erancle tab-erancle organist, for ' music events; ev-ents; and Mrs. Margaret Caldwell, Cald-well, of the L. D. S. college speaking department for speech and story contests. The same committee traveled to every division di-vision in the church and selected select-ed what, in their opinion, were the two best numbers given. The contests will be held in the tabernacle Saturday evening. The St. George orchestra wilT compete against the Liberty stake, and the ladies' chorus will meet the Granite stake winners. Other events will be a mixed quartet, male chorus, M men and Gleaner girls' orations, and Vanguard and Junior girls' retold re-told story. Friday evening the general board of tho M. I. A. will give a reception for all Mutual workers work-ers at Saltair, and just as the sun is setting on the lake fourteen four-teen couples, representing each district in the church, will dance the contest dance. This division divi-sion will he represented by a couple from the Moapa stake. St. Georgo has entered tho M. I. A. contests several times in the past and has taken first places in malo quartet, male chorus cho-rus and orchestra. This is the third year that Prof. Bleak's orchestra or-chestra has gone into church finals. The contestants will leave St. George Friday morning. Mrs. Karl E. Fordham of the South ward M. I. A. will chaperone tho girls while in the city. In order to assist in raising funds for transpotration for the contestants to Salt Lake City, the city council appropriated $75, tho county commissioners gave $50, and a show. "She Got What She Wanted." will he presented pre-sented at the Electric theater tonight as a Mutual benefit. Tho business- houses of the city aro also being asked for small donations. |
