Show HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE i : Washington County News: I notice that you give me credit for publishing the first newspaper in St. George, Utah, which is a mistake. "Our Dixie Times," a four-column folio, was the first newspaper published publish-ed in St. George the first number being be-ing issued January 22, 1868. The late Joseph E. Johnson was editor and proprietor. pro-prietor. True, I worked in the office a great deal. With the 13th number 1 the title was changed to the "Rio Vir-gen Vir-gen Times." There was but one volume published on account of the meager patronage. G. G. R. Sangvanni and Co. commenced com-menced the publication of the "Mineral "Miner-al Cactus," a 2 column folio, about February 22, 1868, as number 5 is ' dated April 17, 1868, subscription $1.00 ! for six months. Volume 2 was called ' "The Cactus," and first number appeared ap-peared September 19, 1868,- subscrip- tion being $2.00 per annum. Only two volumes were published. It was print-ed print-ed at the Times office. I do not know the exact date of the first issue of the "City Journal," the first paper I published, but the first ' number of the second paper, "The Juvenile," appeared on December 13, 1868. During 1870 and 1871, I published pub-lished "The Enterprise." On June 14, 1878, the "St. George Union" made its first appearance, published by Jos. W. Carpenter. "The Evening Telegram" was commenced com-menced April 8, 1879, and was published publish-ed one month, having the special telegraph tele-graph dispatches; it was published by J. W. Carpenter. "The Utah Pomologist" first appeared appear-ed in April, 1870, published by Joseph E. Johnson. It was devoted to agriculture agri-culture and horticulture pursuits. This periodical was continued until the Silver Reef boom, in 1877, then Mr. Johnson moved part of his printing print-ing plant to Silver Reef and commenced commenc-ed the publication of the "Silver Reef Echo," the first number appearing February 24, 1877. Later the whole plant was moved to Silver Reef, and soon after sold to George W. Grouch, who commenced the publication of "The Silver Reef Miner," 'the first number appearing about September 1, 1878, and was published for several years. The "Southern Utah Star" was first issued July 27, 1895, by James T. Jake-man; Jake-man; it being a 5 column quarto, patent pat-ent inside. Mr. Jakeman purchased The Union printing plant, on time, but failed to meet his obligations, and the plant was returned to J. W. Carpenter Car-penter before the volume was completed. complet-ed. In March 1890, I purchased the remains re-mains of the Silver Reef Miner plant, (some of the pied type having been sold to the mills, to be used for babbit metal,) and I still own it, as well as the other material I otherwise obtained, obtain-ed, the combined material being the pioneer printing plant of St. George, Utah. Respectfully, Joseph W. Carpenter. |
