Show GLEAOWARDCDNTEST CLOSES! MAY 28 The clean ward contest in which all three wards have been engaged this spring ends on Friday, May 2S. The next day, Saturday, May 29, it is earnestly urged that all three wards spend the day giving the cemetery a thorough good cleaning up. Much good has been accomplished by each of the wards so far, but there is still room for considerable improvement, im-provement, and it is hoped that during dur-ing the few days left before the contest con-test closes the citizens will set to with a will and complete the job. Foxtail grass is worse this year than ever before and will continue to get worse each succeeding year unless un-less the citizens, all of them, determine deter-mine that they will not have it and set to work to eradicate it. It is now about to seed and unless speedly destroyed des-troyed it will continue as a menace. Many people have entirely removed it from their premises and it is not fair that their neighbors should allow it to grow and get a fresh start on places that have been cleaned up by-seed by-seed from places that have not. There is still some corrals that need cleaning up. No time should be lost in doing this on account of the fly nusiance, for it is fully .establish ed that three-fourths of all flies breed in manure piles and outhouses. Open culverts across sidewalks should be done away with and proper culverts put in to convey water into in-to lots. Much has been done in fixing up fences, but there is still a few which a little time and labor would improve. im-prove. In clearing sidewalks of weeds it is a good plan to thrown the refuse onto the center, the low place in the sidewalk, then during rains the center cen-ter of the sidewalk does not become a gutter down which the water runs-, as it does now on the sidewalks. Little improvements such as these mean a whole lot to the city when it is generally done. Nearly all of them can be done without the expenditure expen-diture of money, just a little time and labor only being required, and it is to be hoped citizens will respond to the call. Just a little time left bear this in mind and keep up in the ranks. |
