Show I Weekly Papers Print Story of Madsen Tragedy The following article writ writ- written written ten by he Vernal Express has been sent to the 52 week week-j ly newspapers in the State of Utah through the courtesy and facilities of Utah State Press Association Ed note When the Lucky Madsen family ate their evening meal together one bitter cold night they little realized that before dawn the following morning one half one half of their number would lose their lives in a tragic fire The happy family of ten made their home in a shelter located on the banks of White River four miles south of Bonanza and 54 miles southeast of Vernal THE FIRE WAS discovered at 5 am on the morning of Jan 12 and only part of the family were able to escape the blaze which enveloped the entire building The father Marion R Lucky Madsen his wife and three children Judy Ellen 11 Betsy Lou 4 and Sammy 2 were burned to death Survivors are Eddie dle 14 Pete 12 John 9 Timmy 8 and Mary Jane 5 Residents of Bonanza and Vernal have set up the Mad Mad- Madsen sen Children Trust Fund at First Security Bank in Vernal or Salt Lake City which is planned for the education of the five orphaned children Funds were being raised by donations dances and other projects STUDENTS AND teachers of the class at Ashley Valley Jr High School where Eddie the oldest child is a member presented a check for to the bank as their contribution contribution tion to the trust fund Relatives have taken the children into their homes The four boys are living with Mr and Mrs Willis Akelund of Vernal who have three child child- children ren of their own Mrs Ake- Ake Akelund lund is a sister to Mr Madsen Mary Jane is staying with an an- an another other aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs Theo Ashton of Lyndon CHECKS MAY be mailed to either the Vernal or Salt Lake bank and designated Madsen Children Trust Fund I |
