Show Y Club new selects woman of year The Business and Professional Profession l Women Club Club has selected Alta C Rust as their woman of the year They will honor her herat herat at dinner at the a Lamplighter Inn on Thursday Nov 18 State officials will be present at that time Alta C Rust was born to Joseph Q Cutler and Estella Marie Woodhouse in Lincoln Idaho Her father was employed as master mechanic for Utah Idaho Sugar Company which required the family to change residence often while sugar factories were being established in inthe inthe the west The family Camily life was severed by the passing of her mother during the In epidemic of 1918 Their residence at that time was Garland Utah this event necessitated the separating of the family with her elder brother Joseph age 12 making his home with friends arid and Alta age 10 living with her grandmother Terry for two years The father remar remar- remarried ried and the two younger sisters Arvilla and Naomi lived at home At age 12 Alta went to live with an aunt Vera to assist In the home and attend school She left Draper and noved to Salt Lake City This was the beginning of Alta making her graduation own way until high school tion At this time she was employed In a doctors doctor's home At th the of her grandmother Cutler Alta entered the Hospital for training The grandmother insisted It would provide a home a profession proCession and security Grandmother Cutler would not allow her to think of leaving or to quit this schooling With this urging and in she succeeded and became a graduate grE nurse Alta gives credit to her brother Joseph not only giving her con con- confidence confidence but any financial aid needed Conditions in the family home made it necessary for Alta to provide a home for Arvilla and Naomi Arvilla completed high school at West High School that year She entered the University of Utah It was at this time she made the decision to go into nurses training Naomi ed on a different career and married that year Arvilla pursued her training and also graduated from Crom the Hospital Hospit l asa as asa a nurse While working a al Grand Grand Canyon as a nurse Alta met Richard D Rust They continued their courtship until May of the next year when they were married in the Manti Temple This was the beginning of the Depression work was scarce so she continued working as a nurse Dick had leased a service station With no money in circulation each day found them behind in assets At this time he heard of a service station for lease in Vernal Harmon S leased him the Con oeo oco Service Station at Fifth West and Main Street lie He also rented fr from m George and Annie Johnstun the place known as the Rust house He returned the next week with Alta and Dilworth their Want infant son and all earthly belongings They immediately became involved in civic church and community affairs Dick joined the Lions Club and was elected to the City where he servo sere ed two terms Through the honest efforts and careful the business grew and prospered Their interest in people their welfare and progress they were soon involved in church and com com com- community affairs and remained servants of people At the death of Dick Alta accepted the responsibility of the family Her early training provided her with a profession to become the bread winner for five sons and herself Immediately she accepted the offer of work at the Uintah County Hospital Six months later she had the opportunity to go Into public health ser ser ser- service vice becoming a school and community nurse this was pursued for twenty one years retiring in 1972 1172 It took only a short time for her church to call her to a health mission among the Indians of North Dakota After an honorable release Alta immediately became involved in church and community health service Four years ago the County Health Department offered her a part time job jobin jobin in Community and School Nursing ty This and Union High Schools counting among I her friends faculty members and parents of that se se- se cion of the county Each of her five sons are very s suc- suc successful c in the professions they have chosen to follow Marvin the youngest Is in Recently his family moved to Dallas Texas to be In charge of the branch office of Sentry In In- In Insurance Company Harold Is Lt Colonel In the Air Force stationed In in Springville Virginia where the family home is He works in the Pen Pen- Pentagon tagon at Washington DC Joseph is located In Bountiful Utah a practicing lawyer in the firm of Kesler and Rust lie He represented the Church as its lawyer for four years in Europe with headquarters in Germany David has also achieved in the profession profession sion of education He went to England taking his family as an exchange teacher Dilworth Is In Chapel Hill HilJ North Carolina He is a professor of English and modern history at the University of North Carolina and Is the author of several research books on literature and authors They have two daughters now attending BYU A family reunion was enjoyed this summer with Alta her five sons and all the grandchildren that could attend Her grandchildren number 25 After Arter four years of extended health work Alta decided this is the time to retire As of Sept 30 1982 Alta C Rust Is a retired public health nurse |
