Show After Alter listening to the doctors and administrator of oC our local hospital explain our current m medical ical needs this past week we were further lurther enlightened by bya a tour of the University of oC Utah Medical Center a p part rt of our annual Utah Press Association Convention At the medical center Dr John A. A Dixon Vice President for Health Sciences explained some of the growth and financial problems they were experiencing He Ile said the center needed to double in size to adequately supply doctors for forthe forthe the projected population growth of the intermountain mountain West Over 62 million is being planned for this It takes about 15 years to benefit from an increased expansion in the form of more doctors on the work market stated Dr Dixon It will take five years to complete the new at least 10 more to train the first increase of physicians Looking ahead 15 years to our projected population we begin to feel an urgency for the need to double the size of our county medical facility In touring the U. U of U. U Medical Center it was immediately evident that the facility was overcrowded Everything was being used to capacity More students are being accepted in classes but half hall as many more are needed to keep up with the communities communities' cries for more doctors Because of the high cost of medical centers neighboring states have not been successful in establishing centers of their own The Utah medical center is a training nucleus for doctors nurses and other related occupations for the whole Intermountain area Dr Dixon explained We came away from this weeks week's two brief encounters with medical problems convinced that medical service is a big expensive business a business we must have for the sake of life me itself and a business we must be willing to un un- The residents of Uintah County must decide now on how soon and how seriously they want enlarged medical services It boils down to how do dowe dowe dowe we get the money to start planning for the needed expansion One of the first items Dr Dixon mentioned concerning the medical center was the money it would cost and where they were planning to find it for their new expansion plans We should begin now to formulate plans to raise the necessary money to construct a facility that will adequately serve the medical needs of our area as well as attract new businesses and people v While at the U. U of U U.
