Show ri s r y i I It y a VERNAL EIGHTH WARD finished In first place In the Region Multi Region Explorer Softball Tournament held In Vernal Vernol Members of the team are front row left to right Shawn Shown King Gary on Munson Kevin Huber Jimmy Tripp Rod Anderson Tim King and John Jacobsen Back Bock row left to right Kent Limb coach Ken Tripp coach Rick Gardner Junior Tripp Jan Jon Goodrich Robert Nelson Gary Gory Huber Jon Winget coach and Gary Gory Taylor bishop Vernal defeats Neola Neola's Explorer softball team had Vernal Eighth Ward Wardon on the ropes when they scored five runs in the bottom bollom of the third inning but they couldn't deliver the knockout punch VERNAL EIGHTH Ward recovered its strength and scored four runs one run two runs tuns and one run in the next four innings to win 10 to 9 over Neola in the first game With Vernal beating Neola a second game was required since Neola had been undefeated undefeated undefeated un un- un- un defeated before the loss to Vernal Eighth Ward The second game lead changed hands several times limes but in the later innings Vernal Eighth Ward took command to win the Region Multi-Region Explorer championship game with wilh an 18 to 12 score I LA AND ANn Vernal Eighth Ward qualified for the Intermountain Intermountain Intermountain In In- Area South Tournament at Spanish Fork which s started smarted arted Tuesday and continues until Friday Vernal Eighth began its trek to the championship with an opening game 17 to 4 win over Wellington Chances of Vernal's winning were dimmed when Roosevelt First Ward defeated them 11 to 8 8 WELLINGTON which had entered the losers' losers bracket after their opening game loss to Vernal Eighth met Vernal Eighth Ward Ware again Vernal Eighth garnered a close 13 to 11 victory over the Wellington team The Vernal Eighth squad then met Roosevelt First Ward the team which had sent them into the losers' losers bracket Vernal exploded for an 11 to 4 win that sent them against Maeser Second IN ORDER for the Maeser Second Ward team to get into the game with Vernal Eighth they had to recover from an opening game 14 to 10 loss to Green River In their next game they defeated Spring Glen 16 to 8 B. They scored an 11 to 4 win over Roosevelt Fourth and defeated Ve Vernal nal Sixth 8 to 7 7 However Vernal Eighth defeated Maeser l Second 13 to 2 and advanced to the championship championship championship cham cham- games with Neola TWO OTHER Uintah County teams besides Maeser Second and Vernal Eighth were Naples Second and Vernal Sixth Naples Second lost to Price Fifth 16 to 13 They were eliminated fr from m the tourney I E s' s due to a 12 to 0 loss to Roosevelt Fourth The Vernal Sixth Ward team picked up a 9 to 0 win over Roosevelt Fourth They def deflated defeated Price Fifth by a score of 13 to 7 However they were bombed by Neola 20 to 6 and were sent to the los rs' rs bracket They were elimina eliminated ed from the tournament as Maeser l Second scored in the bottom of the seventh lowin to win the game IN OTHER opening tournament tournament tournament tour tour- games Neola destroyed Spring Glen 30 to 5 and Roosevelt First smashed Grand Junction Second with a score of 20 to 6 Neola shutout Green River 9 to 0 O.
