Show Echoes from the dust Uintah Stake holds first youth fair Echoes from the Dust feature is selected from the files of the Vernal Express and printed as asit asit asit it appeared on the date noted at atthe atthe atthe the top of each feature September 1910 The Uintah Stake Primary Association will hold a fair allday all allday allday day September 25 in the Vernal ward house Entries must be in inon inon inon on Friday Exhibits will be bein bein bein in the following Domestic art domestic science poultry and agriculture Children will be to sell their exhibits Blue white and red ribbons will be awarded as prizes The entrance is free There will be a concert in the evening at the Opera House where general admission fee of ten cents will willbe willbe willbe be charged everybody come diF Um n Stake tal Primary Fair air is over The children are thinking about the blue red or white ribbons they won the officers and workers are thinking where they could have improved on the exhibition and of the immense lot of work it takes to get up a little fair and of the difficulty in getting gelling any help when they needed it most There could have been some improvements in the arrangements Such as placing all apples on one table all pears on another table all beets by themselves table beets having one one place mangles another etc This arrangement would have assisted the adjudicators as aswell aswell aswell well as the visitors to make comparisons It would be necessary to get all exhibits in the day before at least and as it was many came in about noon Then the exhibit should have been left intact until eight or nine o'clock giving many an opportunity to see the displays who otherwise were unable to see them With these few suggestions we want to comment comment com com- ment upon the exhibits themselves them them- selves Whatever the workers may think of their efforts and however the exhibitors may feel t trio the e general public is satisfied The ice is broken and the people have seen what can be done by a few tew tireless workers It was a childrens children's fair but it was no childs child's play to get it up It took thought and lots of hard work both in the preparation for the fair and the concert which followed Those workers are to be commended for their labor of love for the appreciation is all the pay they receive To exhibitors we would suggest that they try to find out the names of their fruit and vegetables and label the ar ar- In showing vegetables for size it would be well to have them weighted when received and the weight tag attached to the article THERE WAS an exhibit here hereabout hereabout hereabout about seventeen years ago and many old residents say it w was s a good goal one but since that time there hasn't been an exhibit and v the people have hardly an idea what a fair really is that is the younger population That a county fair could be held here and be made to pay its way is no longer doubted by thinking p persons sons The way has been opened and a county fair will no doubt be the outgrowth of this Primary Fair The apples Dapples shown Saturday are the finest size coloring and flavor of anything remembered by many persons who have visited county and state fairs There was a general opinion that the apples would would take first prize in the state fair if they could be gotten out there in good shape The pears were Vere a constant constant con can stant source of wonderment Some foll folks s thought we only had two or three varieties of pears in the valley and to see six or seven varieties and some of the finest possible fruit made them admit they didn't know it all The Hungarian German and Italian Prunes were simply immense Mr G G. G J J. J Carpenter formerly of Grand Junction but now of Provo a said recently that we have some of the finest prunes and plums that he has ever seen He ventured the assertion that we would carry off the honors in that line if we would arrange arrange an exhibit for fo the state fair He lie also said he never saw a better lot of Rocky Hocky Ford ord wa watermelons than he hc saw in one of our meat markets Reverend Stormont of Lake Fork formerly of Mississippi said the flavor of ot those melons was as good as the theold theold theold old Mississippi article C C. C B B. B Carter Jr who has eaten many watermelons coons in Georgia says the melons this year are good as Georgia watermelons and when that is is' conceded then we may say they are as good as are grown There were very few melons shown at atthe atthe atthe the fair TilE THE PEACH exhibit was neglected there were a few Vernal peaches and Mr sent some in but toolate too toolate toolate late to be seen by many That should have been one of the main fruit features There were a few bunches of grapes and some pretty tomatoes There were lots of plums crab apples and corn some twelve feet high and well supplied with ears some giant sunflowers artichokes artichokes artichokes ar ar- ar- ar beets of various kinds and of oC huge growth carrots galore squashes a hundred pounds big and pumpkins that set the mouth to watering for forthe forthe forthe the pies they they heW held in store There were fine hubbards and summer squashes cabbages cauliflower and potatoes which all looked well The bottles and glasses of fruit and pickles put up for the most part bv by the children of the Primary were display of themselves Fancy ancy and plain sewing were very good The poultry exhibit was a move in the right direction but butan butan butan an effort should be made to interest the children in purebred strains All in all the Primary Fair air was a success and we congratulate the promoters August 11 1911 The Board of County Commissioners Commissioners Commissioners Com Com- missioners will name a county fair committee Monday August 14 1911 at 10 o clock am a.m. at the county courthouse At the regular session Monday President T T. T W W. and Secretary Wallace Calder of the Vernal Commercial Club asked to take lake the initiative in the matter of the County Fair on the ground that the Board has appointive jurisdiction over the whole interested territory The officers of the club pledged the hearty support of their organization The county fair appointments to be made are one from each of these Jensen Naples Glines Maeser J Union Dragon Vernal Randlett Moffat Whiterocks Independence and Tail Tait It is possible that the Commercial Club may appoint two members to serve on the committee |
