Show Soil Problems Confronted Confront by hy Area Areu GI vill o By John Soil Soli Service IVo drow Wo drow Nielson soil scientist with the Soil Conservation Service said In hl Inthe Inthe the past homes schools and businesses business business- es often have been constructed with wih ut tut considering how much construction was affecting th ha the natural sources resources or natural resources would affect the com com- plated structure and the surrounding area arM Mr Nielson went on to say ay that urbanization alters soils often with dramatic dramatic dra dra- matic affects on drainage runoff stream stream- flow and soil stability THROUGHOUT the tho country we find Cind soil soH problems confronting builders of ot new homes schools and businesses In every community within the county there are arc homes with basements which during part of ot the year have water in them There arc are areas in which sewage drain fields become inoperative due to high highwater highwater highwater water tables There are arc buildings with cracked walls and foundations because of ot soil instability In more limited areas there arc are homes which arc are flooding during during dur duro ing years of ot high spring runoff These are arc problems which can touch each and every everyone one of oC us as members of oC the Uintah County communities We Weare arc are all concerned with the environment around us We want to live in clean healthy attractive communities We want to see new homes and schools constructed in our neighborhoods because because be be- cause they add to our enjoyment and our community strength and welfare IN TURN we are all concerned with sewage disposal systems which pollute pol poi lute the ground water and air with unhealthy unhealthy un un- un healthy organisms and odors the financial financial fin fin- ancial losses due to flooding and erosion the costly cosily damage done by soil instability ity and rising water tables Fortunately these problems can be successfully dealt with through range long comprehensive planning zoning and building codes In the effort to avoid some of these problems the Uintah County Planning Commission has requested and received ed from USDA Soil Conservation Service Service Ser Ser- vice soil maps and interpretive information information mation to assist with planning decisions in drawing up a range long-range comprehensive sive plan for the county THE MAPS indicate soil limitations for small buildings drainage and overflow overflow over over- flow hazards septic tank and filter field criteria and agricultural land capability Knowing the limitations of the soil and knowing the changes brought about by urbanization it is possible to institute institute institute tute regulations that reduce the hazards by indicating appropriate design and construction to overcome the limitations HOME BUILDERS and home owners are urged to work directly with their city and county officials local zoning administration ad ministration and health department and building inspector They all can give valuable information concerning construction construction construction tion problems s Dont Don't overlook the USDA Soil Conservation Conservation Conser Conser- Service or the County Agricultural Agent concerning existing or potential problems involving soil and water |
