STEWART Uintah County Sheriff Today's Subject Hes Too Big To We in law enforcement hear this so often hes too big to spank now It most usually comes conies from a parent at his wits end trying to make his teen be be- have WE HAVE people brought into this office office of of- fice flee nearly every day who are arc too big to spank but 1 Im I'm not so sure a good old fashioned trip to the woodshed would not be a good place to start in straight straightening ening them out Imagine what law enforcement enforcement enforcement en en- people would get accomplished accomplish accomplish- ed if they stopped all ll forms form's of punishment punishment punish punish- ment because someone was too big to spank I What a world this would become become be be- come cornel 1 So when someone is beyond spanking spanking spanking spank ing or a good bawling out to punish his wrong doing we as adults must hand handout handout handout out other forms of punishment Yes it takes a lot of effort to do so Yes it makes for upset nerves and sometimes hard feelings temporarily but isn't it worth while to put forth this effort The teens teen's whole future I life e and happiness depends depends de de- de on him learning that he cannot go without punishment for the wrong things he insists on doing over and over SOME PARENTS use the family car caras caras caras as a means of punishing teens A week without driving privileges for small rule breaking two weeks and longer for more serious wrongs Perhaps your teen is old enough and fortunate enough to have his own car so you ou feel taking away driving privileges might be difficult to accomplish I would point out to those parents that the minor under 21 years of age may be operating what is termed his own car but you are the one carrying the fulL for his actions in his vehicle Therefore you still have the right to ground him place the car in inthe inthe inthe the drive for a week a month or until hes he's passed his birthday and becomes becomes be be- comes personally responsible I IA A FEW MORE severe punishments 1907 when they moved to Roosevelt MR BENNION attended elementary school and one year of high school in Roosevelt The con con- rule violations might be 1 1 Revocation of ot night out privileges for a given period of time 2 Complete cut off from family finan financial cal cial help for spending money and nonessentials nonessentials nonessentials non non- essentials frequently works wonders 3 Forbidding usual activities es with Lay favorite friends strictly enforced can be a sobering pill to swallow 4 4 Some teens make an about face in a hurry if they are given a week or two of what they consider to be the worst jobs around the house NOW I I IAM AM not telling anyone what to todo do with their teens What works on one will not work on another These are suggestions that come to mind from my experience in law v enforcement from hearing many tales from teens who have gone much further astray than simple home rule infractions and hearing the the things that their did not demand demand de de- mand of them And since some parents par ask my advice perhaps some of these suggestions will be of interest to all When suggesting corrective measures for parents to use I am sometimes asked the question but what if we make him so mad he runs away from home My answer to this th's is simple if it comes to this the teen who actually runs away from home will return in mast most every case of his own accord a much wiser person and a much easier person to get along with at home homel THE IMPORTANT thing here is that you cannot allow a teen to think that you are living in dread of him running away Once he has this impression if he is this kind of a person hell he'll walk all allover over you and everyone in the household Above all else you must retain the status of the adult in complete control acting in fairness setting the rules and handing out punishment when necessary No other situation will hold a teens teen's respect respect re re- re and rightfully so I REALIZE there is a lot more to this subject than we have had space to discuss discuss discuss dis dis- dis- dis cuss but I want to encourage parents not to throw up their hands in dismay when a teen needs punishment just because because be be- cause hes he's too big to spank There are many other means of punishment that will be far easier on him than punishments punishments punish punish- ments he may have to take if he doesn't straighten up and finds himself in a court of law later in life Next week The Beard The Moustache and The
