Show R Rep p. p Burtons Burton's Washington Report I Rate of Inflation is Concern of Nation By Laurence J. J Burton The other day my wife asked me to pick up some milk on my way home So I stopped at a grocery store near our house and got a half gallon carton But when I went to the counter to pay for the milk I discovered that the 50 cents I had out would not pay for itA it A single half gallon of milk costs 60 cents in Washington D D. D C C. C today I UNFORTUNATELY the price of milk is not only high just here in Washington it is high throughout the country But more unfortunate still is the fact that the price of almost everything is much higher today nationwide than it was say fi five ve years ago It is true that along with the rise in prices paychecks are getting larger but all too many people receive raises and yet yet- their purchasing powers are not increased This This' state of affairs is the result of inflation AS LONG as raises keep pace with price increases it might seem that there is no cause for alarm After all if what cost years ago costs 2 00 t L wa-F wa tik I rt SPURS riding club purchased purchased purchased pur- pur chased a lamb iamb as a prize to be given at their western their western dance Saturday Saturday Sat Sat- evening Merlin Richens received received received re re- the lamb iamb Dinah Spurs Club Awards Fat Lamb To Merlin Richens A large lamb was awarded to Merlin Merlin Mer Mer- lin Richens of Vernal by members of the Dinah Spurs ladies ladles riding club Saturday Saturday Satur Satur- day evening at their western dance in inthe inthe inthe the old Moose Lodge E Earl rl Reary and his of Roosevelt furnished music for the evening even even- ing OTHER PRIZES awarded Included a pair of split leather chaps donated by Utahn to Al AI of of Ouray Ou Ou- ray rayl I a a. a ceramic salt and pepper shaker shaker- towel set donated by to Hal Massey of Jensen Two Chinese dinners for two by Diamond Diamond Dia Dia- mond Hills Cafe to Carma Hacking of Vernal and Effie Brousard of Vernal a turkey by McNeill's Market to Diane Rober of Vernal a lounge steak dinner by Buds Bud's Sportsmans Sportsman's Lounge to Louise Dugan of of- Jensen TWO 5 gift certificates on purchase of f gasoline by Hals Hal's to Phyliss Howard of Vernal and Dean Chew of Jensen cologne and dusting powder by Rexall Drug to Mrs Tom Aldridge of Vernal a boneless ham by Western Foods to Duane Enyeart of Verna Ver Ver- na nal A dinner by Sage Cafe to io Charles Woodard Woodard Wood Wood- ard of Vernal a Hot or Cold server by Milts Milt's Merchandise to Bill Littell of Vernal two chicken dinners dinners din din- ners by A and W Drive in Drive in to LaVar Anderson of Vernal A BOOK of remembrance by Garden Gate Floral to Smokey of Jensen cosmetics valued at by byGall Gail Gall Richards Cosmetics to Dallas Galley Galley Gal Gal- ley of Vernal watch band which was awarded to Sprouse Jewelers contributed a gents watch band which was awarded to Louie of Jensen Mr Ras Has musson mussen donated the band back to the club and it was auctioned for 2110 to Dr Durrell Chivers Olivers who In turn donated donated don don- it back to the club The band was today and one is earning more than twice as much it might seem that our buying powers have not been affected It seems logical to think that the only bad effects of such an elevation in prices prices ces ees are psychological one cant can't help feeling cheated when he must pay 10 cents for a nickel candy bar of the good old days and and inconvenient we we now have to use more money to purchase goods IF THE present alarming rate of Inflation inflation In in- continues unchecked that nickel candy bar could require 10 nickels to tobe tobe tobe be purchased before long we we would all have to use a lot of cash even for the smallest of purchases es Actually though the above two bad effects of inflation are not by any means the worst ones Inflation causes causes tremendous tremendous tre tre- hardships on those with fixed Incomes As the value of the dollar is is' lessened by increasing prices those with fixed incomes e eg e.g. g those on pensions those on welfare and those on social security security se se- have their purchasing powers greatly diminished The retired the help help- less the unorganized these people are really hurt by Inflation President Nixon last week asked Americans Americans Amer Amer- leans to join with him In helping to cut cutback cutback cutback back our country's rate of inflation He lie has asked business and labor leaders to act responsibly This means that businessmen businessmen bus bus- should strive not to raise the prices of their goods and labor should try to refrain from asking for higher wages ALSO MR Nixon asked all of us to bear the burden of restraint in our personal borrowing and buying decisions Prices tend to go up when there is a great demand for goods and conversely conversely conver conver- sely they tend to drop when their Is little demand So we all can help lower price levels by I not making purchases that can be postponed I think we should be concerned about our present rate of inflation but we need not become overly frightened However However How How- ever we all should make a conscious effort to help reduce It for a high rate of inflation necessitates dr drastic adjustments adjustments adjust adjust- ments and while these are being made many people suffer greatly |
