Show Utah Hosts Bighorn Sheep Council Wildlife manag managers rs from sev several ev eral oral western states and representatives representatives of federal land management management management man man- agencies met In Monticello Mont Mont- recently as Utah hosted hosted host host- ed Its first Desert Bighorn Sheep Council meeting Nearly technicians met metto metto metto to discuss management of the Desert Bighorn its habitat and andfield andfield andfield field research techniques The desert bighorn is an animal unique to the states of Utah New Mexico Arizona California Nevada Texas and to our neighboring country Mexico Bud Phelps director of the Utah Division of Fish and Game welcomed the assemblage assemblage assem assem- blage with comments on Utah's wildlife resources There are eight big game animals in Utah Mr Phelps said and we have open seasons on six of these animals Only the Rocky Mountain Mountain Moun Moun- tain bighorn sheep and Rocky Mountain goat are not hunted In the fisheries field Utah is primarily a trout fishing area although we do have some warm water fishing areas such as Lake Powell We have 14 species of fish now classed as game fish In this state Our upland game bird pr pro program gram provides an opportunity to hunt 11 species of game birds The two day meeting in Monticello was followed by a a two day field tour of Utah's desert bighorn range Utah has held two hunting seasons on the desert bighorn in 1967 and 1968 on a special permit basis for residents only |
