Show 0 Uintah County Flood Program Never before has Uintah County been as prepared for a flood threat as It Is at present Further preparation Is being made as flood control work ork continues A great amount of money and time have been spent this spring in taking the necessary measures to protect property from damages due to flooding caused by excessive runoff inthe In Inthe inthe the high elevations as the above average amounts of snow melts off oUr Uintah County Commissioners Commissioners' are directly responsible for flood control In the county and early this year they started organizing a flood control committee This committee was charged with the responsibility re reo of making a survey and reporting back to the Commissioners what they would recommend doing to prepare for the expected floods The most experienced talent In the va valley ey was chosen to form this committee The committee returned after making many surveys and investigations with projects amounting to over The Commissioners realized they could not afford this type of expenditure with the present present pre pre- sent budget and petitioned for help h The US U.S. Corps of Army Engineers were contacted and er asked to assist t Immediately representatives tI of the Engineers came out and looked over the areas and were convinced that the county needed help In five days after the initial visit was made a team of ten bulldozers were workIng work Ing Ing on clearing the Ashley Creek reek From this start everyone 0 was as assigned different phases of the flood control project The county hauled large rocks to reinforce the bridges on Ashley Creek and line danger areas The City took the assignment to protect Its Us city water main in the canyon beyond Merkley Park and the canal companies worked on their Individual diversions and With this type of cooperation and organization atlon the flood control project amazed even the skeptic who said It couldn't be doneAs done As one drives over Ash Ashley ey Creek and sees what a thorough job the US U.S. Corps of Engineers En have done of clearing the channel It gives one a sense of comfort to know that we weare weare weare are better prepared to meet the anticipated threat of high waters this year This week the US U.S. Corps of Engineers will also do flood control work on the Whiterocks Whiterocks White White- rocks and Uinta rivers way Rights were given by the Ute Indian Tribe to proceed All Allin In all everyone should be complimented compliment compliment- ed for their concern this year In seeing that Uintah County is better prepared to cope with witha a flood threat To the land owners for signing rights of entries to the many unselfish hours of donated time given by committee members and to the various agencies agencies' in cooperating with each other in contributing their resources and talents in this cause We take our hats off to the Uintah County Commissioners for the action they have taken in preparing the county for an anticipated damaging consequence Only time will tell the whole story but we are convinced convinced ced that damage this year will be held at a minimum thanks to to three responsible officials offic- offic and all those who responded to the call caU for help when it was made a |
