P Long will observe her Bath birthday November 12 There will be an open house housein in her honor from 2 to 4 p pm p.m. m. m at atthe atthe atthe the Sunrise Convalescent Center the family requests no gifts please MRS LONG was born bern November 12 1888 on her fathers father's homestead in Ashley Ward where she has lived most of her life liCe with her husband Porter Long They lived in Iowa following their marriage in 1908 for nearly eight years They moved back to lo Vernal in 1915 Their family consisted of six children Nora Ruby Freestone Gene and George Long Two sons are deceased Porter Jr and Albert A Her husband died In 1963 Minnie MiMie recalls many early day events in Vernal and old Ashley town near the present Dodds ranch Her Iler grandmother El Eliza za Jane Taylor Luckey and her brothers Alma and Taylor walked across the plains with their family when the pioneers came to Utah Eliza Jane married Isaac Thomas Luckey in 1865 They were the parents of 12 children Minnies Minnie's mother Nellie was the oldest child Nellie married William S. S Powell in 1886 He was one of the first settlers in Ashley Valley To them were born five children Minnie MiMi being the eldest MINNIE remembers her great uncles Alma and land T T. Taylor very very well Alma Ii lived ved o on the John Harrison place h in Ashley ward He built the large brick home that is still standing on the Ute Harrison place Norris Harrison still resides in it She recalls the men men preparing and burning th the brick f for r this ho house se seand and other early brick homes including th the John home where the Ernest Winklers now live ive I in Ashley Ward im nI Taylor Mountain was named after fter the Taylor brothers J it r r. R Infant Back row Minnie Long great grandmother and Nora grandmother in early Ashley Valley history Minnie MiMie has lived to be in two five generation pictures and had the family been able to travel to Idaho she could have been in a third as her grandmother grandmother grandmother grand grand- mother Luckey lived to be 99 years old SHE RELATED one time lime when her mother Nellie who was nearing 80 years old was preparing to make a trip to Idaho Falls to visit her mother Eliza Jane and as she was getting gelting on the bus in Vernal she told the driver that she was going to visit her mother in Idaho The driver looked at her astonished It was difficult to believe that this little elderly lady could still have a mother living It has been almost years since Minnies Minnie's father homesteaded the acres which is all still owned by his descendants There are nine homes on this land in which reside the children a and grand an-grand- d grandchildren grandchildren grand grand- children of William S. S and Nellie L L. Powell This land is isone isone isone one of the very few homesteads still owned by the direct descendants of those who originally settled there Minnie MiMie has 13 grandchildren 31 great-grandchildren great and five gr great grandchildren Other living relatives are area a brother Bud Powell Powell and me met sister Nellie Kloeppel and aunt Rose Walker of Roosevelt One sister Elizabeth Elizabelh Long and a R brother John Powell are deceased Minnie and her sister Elizabeth married twin brothers Porter and Pete Long of Iowa The spent their lives living close to each other Both spent part of their early married life liCe in Iowa then later lived on adjoining farms in Ashley Ward on part of what was their fathers father's homestead MINNIE I has a wonderful outlook on life and stays cheerful although she is handicapped due to arthritis She keeps busy with different activities in the convalescent home such as crocheting reading taking an active part partin in lh the games and entertainment held for the residents She also keeps abreast of the news and anda a activities of the community One event of extreme interest to her is voting during election years years' She never misses misses' a chance to cast her vote She feels badly when people of her choice do not get elected but knows that that is the way things are She has lived a very full and busy life and prides herself for her many experiences She is very proud of her herman many friends and descendants and wishes them well a i ia bt a w f l J x 4 i of t r lIt l- l It 4 i SECOND FIFTH Generation picture token taken year Is Bill grandfather M Minnie Long great great-great- grandmother Mar Marisa sa Jane infant Back row row Ronald father and great grandmother Nora |
