Show 0 UHS teacher gives views Deat Deal Editor After your printing of Marilyn Hunting's letter May 26 regarding the problems at Uintah High School you will undoubtedly be flooded with smiling cheery optimistic she doesn't what she what know she's talking about about replies As one who has taught at Uintah for six years and has had to live everyday with the situation there I can tell you that there is very little to be cheery about and Mrs Hunting does indeed know what she is talking about In January January- of 1975 13 teachers teachers' met with the school T v J tl i administration t 4 ra on tot Q express concern about about academics discipline attendance maintenance maintenance maintenance main main- and faculty morale Although the teachers expressed expressed ex ex- pressed a willingness to solve the problems they were told in essence that it was not their business AS TIME progressed and matters became worse 20 teachers signed a letter to the school board expressing concern concern concern con con- cern over these same matters Waiting for school to be out the board met with representatives of the faculty and told them again that it was not their business Again this year when faculty members expressed concern concern- parents prodded the school board into sending down someone to investigate All of the faculty members were interviewed but when the report was given to parents and teachers we discovered to our great surprise that we had no problems at all Teachers all were told that if they still were unwilling unwilling unwilling un un- willing to work in that situation they must accept a transfer to another school Repeatedly teachers have been told they would be reprimanded if they spoke to the general public about the school I believe it is the right of a teacher to stand up for quality education Since the teachers of Uintah High have gone through all of the channels available to them to bring about reform and it is time the general public and the parents of this community make it their business to find out just what is going on in our high school REGARDLESS OF how diligently school administrators try to explain away the problems the fact is that attendance attendance attendance at at- has dropped 10 to per percent percent percent cent academics are being ignored programs are being cut discipline is not rot being administered and teachers who are vocal in trying to encourage academics discipline and attendance are not only being labeled as troublemakers they are being harassed and pressured In addition those who have expressed concern are being maligned with rumors and outright falsehoods which have been concocted to represent them as malicious malcontents and incompetents If U the community will check Into the qualifications experience experience ex ex- ex records and ex ex- ex pertise of the people who are dissatisfied they will find that most of them are experienced knowledgeable and competent Because of the unwillingness of the administration and school board to respond to the demand for improvement in the high school and because of the personal which I have received in the last two years I am resigning my job at Uintah I can can only hope that the parents of the community will not be content with the snow job they are receiving from the board of education and district staff start After titer teaching over 1000 of your students I can tell you tha that t the education of your our young oung people is worth looking into They are on the whole a pleasure to work with Give dive Give them the opportunity to go i to a school which stresses academics and responsibility instead of ot one which allows them to wallow in per per- Sincerely Beverly Beyerly Ramsey if |
