Show x 1 BUILD The Guard Post BY MIKE lIIn PERRY ERRY This past year marked the beginning of a new era for Cor the nations's Guard and Reserve unit of many active duty military installations Guard and Military strength and support Vietnam however still fresh in the minds of many Americans and the abolition of the draft accounted for a substantial decrease in membership in many units TilE THE Engineers Co of Vernal have demonstrated that the military stands for much more than soldiers at arms but a sincere effort to participate and assist in the activities and projects of the community The emphasis is on combat readiness yet many hours weeks and months are devoted to community and civic projects The Bantam Basketball league a Guard sponsored activity has now been in operation for many years Countless numbers of young boys ha have ve from this program During the past year the Vernal Guard participated in inthe inthe inthe the following civic projects Diversion of the quickly eroding Duchesne River from the banks of Duchesne City's sewer ponds support of men and equipment in the acre forest fire in Squaw Basin Duchesne County construction of a new road in the Scout camp campat at Windy Park ambulance support for the U. U S. S Golden Knights parachute team which performed In Vernal During October construction of oC new parking lot tot north of the Guard Armory a city county and army cooperative project color guards for Cor parades and civic ceremonies and project Save a Lake fake a nation wide survey sponsored by the environment protection agency Weekend training consisted bridge construction at Starvation reservoir road evaluation and repair demolitions and small arms qualifications first aid mechanics rito training construction of a confidence course at camp Williams heavy equipment op operations rations and training in chemical biological and radiological warfare SERVICE to our country is not a thing of the past more than ever the military is looking for Cor individuals with leadership ability and a desire to fulfill service to their country Tom Wardell C of Captai ot the Vernal Guard says Ev Even n though most of us are apprehensive about the economic outlook we are thankful to live in this country at this time Most of us would rather be here than any other country in the world If we hope to keep our nation free as it is today we must keep it strong The National Guard today is a well-trained well group of men and women who are helping to keep this country strong Members of the Engineer of Vernal and its ts detachment in Price are arean arean I Ian an outstanding group of men who are proud of the uniform I they wear and its meaning to 1 each American To you they wish a very Merry Christmas and successful joyous New Year |
