M Hursh MD M.D. Consultant National Dairy Council F THE RISKS OF HEART DISEASE DISEASE III III Well here goes for the last of three columns on heart disease Weve We've said It Is a disease of multiple mule mul tiple causes We W. io re explained that thata a n risk factor Is not a cause of heart disease but rather a statistical stalls stalls- h eal likelihood that merely points toward the tile chances of A 3 heart Attack We have also talked about research research re re- re search at Massachusetts Institute of Technology that suggests weight control may be the best approach to heart disease prevention pre at least as far as a diet i is 34 concerned We wont won't go Into it at length here But it is believed by many researchers that stress is an important im risk factor In heart disease dis ease case that It Is the chronically up uptight individual who succumbs What About Eating I But since this is a column about nutrition lets let's get back to eating I have certain beliefs and I they are based both on my experience ex ex- ex as a researcher as a practicing physician and my own study of the literature of heart disease I believe in the balanced diet approach I believe peo people le should choose their foods from a wide variety I like the four food groups approach as a basic de sign The meat group the mUkand milk mUk and milk products group fruits and vegetables and breads and cereals These groups supplemented supple by reasonable amounts of fats and oils so that your daily meals dont don't exceed th the calories you can handle without being overweight are the basis of enjoyable and healthful eating I I jam am a moderate I dont don't think you have to go out and i practically kill yourself trying to be an athlete ath ath- lete But you should be physically active It will feed both your soul and your body And there Is no M point in being an tight up-tight person one that annoys himself and ev everyone else Nor need you ba be baa bea a slob who doesn't care about anything or anybody The Middle Road Take the middle road rond in life lifestyle style Let your excesses be oj ot kindness for other persons and a sensible striving on your part for fOl personal excellence in what it isyou Is Isyou isyou you do These are the tonics I think that will truly help you live a full and happy life liCe Isn't this what we are aro all aiming for And there is one more thought I have Life Life is not the process of avoiding a death It is living to the tho fullest commensurate with your talents your basic health andI suppose your disposition What 1 I am saying Is It is a fearful man indeed who spends unnecessary time and concern fearing heart disease None of us gets out of this thing alive And there are worSe worse ways to go I do not pooh-pooh pooh the real tragedy of premature heart attacks in men in the so so- called prime of life and earlier We must find answers to that problem But Dut for so many of the heart deaths it Is because we wa have conquered so many other diseases that heart disease Is Js now one one one of the le leading ding onuses causes of death Sensible medical men know this and they dont don't like to see the public frightened unnecessarily un un- unnecessarily necessarily about possible heart attacks |
