C columnist My wife and I I 1 w were re to sit next to him during the banquet Jack said he remembers remembers' Vernal l very well The last time he visited d here oni on i invitation of his brother in brother inlaw law who is stake president of Uintah Stake was f for r a fund raising dinner for the stake He lie jokingly q quipped that visit cast cost me He explained that an aspiring attorney a member of the John Birch Society attempted to file a defamation suit against him He lie said the judge threw the case out as soon as it was presented But it still cost me bucks for an attorney he grinned Jack gave a terrific presentation on therole therole the therole role of the press in protecting the right to know the truth The theme of his talk was taken from Thomas Jeffersons Jefferson's famous fa famous utterance Were it left to me to decide whether we should have government govern ment without newspapers or newspapers without government I should not hesitate hesitate hesi tate for a moment to prefer th the latter We were also buoyed up as well as surprised to received the first place award in competition with the largest weekly papers in the state for the best editorial of the year year- at the Press meet We also received third place for the best society page and honorable mention in the use of illustrative material con test This Is the first time we have ever placed in the editorial contest and guess what editorial won the honors It was the one titled Now is the time to Build an Indoor Swimming Pool on November 18 I felt quite discouraged with the lack of response it seemed to receive but nevertheless it got state recognition The seemingly dry condition of the Vernal area was demonstrated over the weekend by a rash of grass fires Our local fire chief Darrell Wardle doesn't want to spend all his time the next few months mouths putting out grass and brush fires started by carelessness So please be extremely careful during the present explosive dry condition of the forage areas In Ashley Valley The local sheep and cattle grower growers are very concerned with the recent executive ex ex- order from President Nixon to prevent predator control If the sheep men cannot control coyotes they might just as well get out of the business right now one of them told me Im I'm sure most of us dont don't realize reaUze the loss sheep men suffer from predators even when they do everything possible to destroy them no wonder they arc are upset u jI urr rr tr trOne One last quote we picked up at the Press convention Doing business without with out advertising is like winking at a pretty girl in the dark you know what youre you're doing but nobody else does |
