Show 1 f e 7 r I r I 1 lI aka 1 i iI I II I j t o 1 it 1 t i tiu u 4 Ij l A d TRIBAL JUDGE Henry left discusses I program with Francis as plans are made to curb excessive drinking and help Indians with their problems Ute Tribe Adopts Program On Alcoholism The Tribal Business Commit tee at Fort Duchesne pass ed a resolution approving the adoption of an alcoholism pro gram for the Indian people They appropriated and transferred an additional of Tribal Court funds to this program These funds along with fund transferred from their OEO Community Action Program and given to the committee previously will provide sufficient funds to operate a limited alcoholism education and reo re habilitation program for the fiscal year THE ALCOHOLISM program was presented to the Business Committee by Henry Tribal Judge and Fenton Moss Consultant from from the University of utah Graduate School of Soc ial dal Work Judge is the chairman of the Ute Reser Heser Alcoholism Committee This committee Is composed of representatives from Bureau of Indian Affairs Public Health Service Tribal Business Com the Indian communities Uintah County Welfare Depart ment Alcoholics Anonymous Juvenile Court and the Clergy It was organized during the I late summer of 1967 and has met regularly to identify the I I health welfare and law enforce merit ment problems related to the excessive drinking of the Indian people and to develop a pro gram grain to help them with these problems The BusIness Corn Com I resolution brings to light lighta a great deal of hard work by byI Judge and his corn com I mittel According to Professor Moss this is the fIrst time In history that an Indian Tribe has ed end and financed its own alcohol alcohol- alcoholism ism program There are other Indian alcoholism programs but these programs are arc financed from government funds This is a compliment to the fore sight and judgement of the Ute Ule Tribal Leaders HOWEVER since excessive drinking is the kind of a pro blem that effects every aspect of drinkers health and wel fare as well as that of his fam ily members Professor Moss feels it is only fair that com and governmental agen- agen agencies cies des should assist the Tribe in broadening and financing their alcoholism program Within this framework Judge Up- Up chegos alcoholism committee will be requesting financial as as- as assistance from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Public Health Service and the Utah Com on Alcoholism to support their efforts in broadening their alcoholism program |
