Show q i r r foo W i f I fat j 1 1 i IJ t 1 f i i r J l A I r J I WING HEADQUARTERS officers of Salt Lake City met with Vernal CAP members last week They are from left Major Peeples 2 2nd nd Lt It R K Murrl Lt It George Oldham Lt Walace Perry Major Crougher ghar Lt Francis Palmer Stan Anderson Bob Johnson and Neldon Charter Granted Vernal Air Force By Lt RK Muirl PIO June 23 the Vernal Composite Com Com- Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol received its charter as asan asan an auxiliary of the US Air Force There were 16 charter members The membership has now grown to 25 which includes pilots observers radio operators ors org and technicians instructors and others Since being organized there has been instruction and train train- training I lag ing in such subjects as emer- emer emergency emergency gency services first aid navi navi- navigation gation civil defense search and rescue survival flying and communications LAST SATURDAY five memo mem- hers bers of the Utah Wing staff three Air Force and one Utah Aeronautics staff personnel flew into Vernal and with the able assistance of com com- commission mission member Stewart Ash ton helped to polish the training and and procedures of the local squadron as well as give certain tain flight tests necessary for fors fors s p e c i f fie i c search rating Through the cooperation and joint efforts of Sheriff Fletcher and Search and Rescue posse a simulated search was staged where in two posse officers Merlin Walker and Harold Pope became lost while ar arrowhead hunting in the area south of Bonanza Receiving the simulated alert at 1034 am the local squadron corn com mander designated Lt George Oldham as mission coordinator or and the search was under way under the watchful and evaluating eyes of visiting auth After preliminary briefing the first of three search planes was dispatched at 1100 am The lost were eventually spotted by CAP pilot Lt Wallace Perry along with Lt Bud Durborow copilot ver A message was then drop ped to the lost injured in in- in informing forming them that their lion tion had been radioed d in and their rescue would be effected by the Sheriffs Sheriff's Search and Rescue posse programmed through the Federal Aviation Agency and Western Air Res Res- Res Rescue cue at AIm Califor nia whereas to effect on au au- au authorized CAP Air Search and Rescue for a lost child hunter or other type distress The search is usually initiated through the County Sheriff call ing the State Aeronautics dir dir- director ector who in turn calls Western Air Rescue in California For some other instances the Civil Defense office will Initiate an authorized mission Through the joint efforts of the local Civil Air Patrol Civil Defense and the Sheriff Search and Rescue Hescue Posse it is hop ed to have the finest search and rescue facilities in this area that is possible It is even de- de desired de sired to have rescue teams to include parachute rescuers PRESENTLY the local CAP is awarding a free color ed TV set on display at Ash tons ton's |
