Show REASSESSING OUR TOURIST PROGRAM A new look at Utah's tourist promotion program was discussed in a recent editorial in the Deseret News The editorial wondered if we are really spending our tourist dollars where they will do the most good It still seems we are sometimes prone to put the cart before the horse by advertising Utah's attractions before we have the com facUlties facilities for handling tourist trade ad the editorial said It mentioned the deplorable condition of the Great Salt Lake beaches Lake Powell where 90 percent of the lake is in Utah yet Arizona reaps 95 per cent of the benefits because of its marina at In our own area we might call attention to the Red Cloud Loop which could become a major tourist attraction if the road was im- im improve improved prove proved At Flaming Gorge we are losing a lions share of the Salt Lake and Ogden traffic to Wyoming because Lucerne Valley and Sheep Creep ramps are reached over a low grade highway Yet many visitors to the area miss the most attractive part of Flaming Gorge an and the most delightful scenery when they fail to visit the area near the dam The sub standard road way mid between Vernal and Jones Hole the Dowd Mountain off Cut the Blue Mountain road between the Dinosaur Visitors Center and Harpers Corner and the Thompson Ouray-Thompson road are all projects which will he be n a boost to our tourist traffic if we can speed up their completion Vernal is becoming one of the major tour tour- tourist centers of the state with an abundance of tourist attractions right at our door such as the Dinosaur National Monument Utah Field FieldHouse Fieldhouse House Flaming Gorge Reservoir world famous river trips Utah's longest for for for- forest est cst highway picnic and camping areas reas and fishing and hunting unexcelled |
