Show 1 0 Safe and Sound But Embarrassed lost Pilot Lands at Leota A private pilot first lost in heavy clouds and fog and later ignorant that a search for his craft had been started caused considerable stir Wednes Wednes- Wednesday day and Thursday last week inthe in inthe the Basin INCIDENT began when Ro Ho- Hobert bert berl J Jeffrey and his wife o of ofSan San Bernardino Calif were returning from skiing in Aspen Colorado to Green River on a leg of a homeward bound flight Mr Jeffery became lost while in flight Wednesday afternoon over western Colorado and east east- em n Utah lie He eventually established radio contact with the Rangely airstrip operator and for an hour the men attempted to establish the crafts craft's location Just before radio contact was lost the pilot mentioned a small town near a bridge across a river HEARING nothing further from the lost plane the Rangely operator Informed local officials of the Incident As it was near near- nearly ly Iy dark ground units of the Uintah County Search and Res cue Patrol were called out and most of the night was spent patrolling roads in an area south of Randlett Leota Red Wash and Ouray hoping the pilot who had reported his craft low on fuel had set down on a road About am Thursday morning Uintah Deputy Sheriff Carl received a report o of a small plane which had landed in Leota the night before INVESTIGATION revealed the California couple had land land- landed ed before dark and walked to the Cal Jorgensen store a ashor ashor shor distance away There the were od ed and given a ride to Vernal where the couple stayed the night in a motel Not thinking a search was under under- underway way Mr Jeffrey failed to call authorities and tell of his safe landing The pilot refueled his plane that day thanked everyone for their kindness apologized for forthe forthe the alarm and departed Friday morning J j IJ |
