Show Letter To the Editor Agency Supt Sends Comments Dear Editor Your editorial of April 21 concerning your welfare cases was informative and very well web put The figures do suggest a situation that should concern everyone of us living in the Basin area At the Agency here we are expressly concerned with I the high percentage of Indians that find themselves in need of welfare help Although our Indian citizen has made and does make a definite contribution tion to the tax base that sup ports welfare assistance the ov eras concern we should have is that they be self sup porting In my work with the Indian people I have become convinced that they wish to be beas beas as productive in a decent way as anyone else We very seldom know or understand the influences that keep our I Indian people from achieving a competitive employable status We also find it encouraging that the county welfare depart ment has moved from a situa tion of giving assistance to one of rehabilitation I believe the whole attitude and effort of the Uintah County Welfare Depart ment over the last two years is one that they can well be proud of I could not say enough relative to the enlightened ef fort that they are making As yo you indicate we in the Bureau of Indian Affairs will willbe ll be undergoing some stresses and I believe they will be good ones One of the greatest con cerns that I feel weakens not only our Indian people but many of our Basin people are the for ces of separation that are in play In this beautiful country The day that every individual in this Basin can link arms arms to- to together together gether in a meaningful state of brotherhood then we will not have the kinds of figures that you have shown in the editorial Some of us feel this state of separation is so serious and meaningful that we would like to submit a guest editorial if you are interested This would not be an effort to be negatively critical but would be concern ed with promoting a construe constructive tive growth within the Basin so that all of the people in this fine area will be able to have havea a better life Sincerely yours M L SCHWARTZ Superintendent |
