Cyrus issued the decree de-cree that returned the Jewish exiles ex-iles to their ancestral land and assisted as-sisted them in rebuilding Jerusalem. Jerusa-lem. After seven months, In which they had established themselves in their new homes, the people gave their attention to the rebuilding rebuild-ing of the temple. They desired to make it the center of their nation's na-tion's life, as it had been through ages gone. They set up the altar and then labored to build the temple tem-ple around it. Under the leadership of Zerub-babel, Zerub-babel, the governor, and of Joshua, a son of the high priest, the work was done and the ancient sacrifices sacri-fices were offered as of old. Hag-gai, Hag-gai, a practical man, sought to encourage en-courage the workmen, urging them to go into the mountains to secure wood to be used in the rebuilding. Then the word of the Lord came unto Zecharlah with a message for Zerubbabel, a very great utterance: utter-ance: "Net by might, nor by power, pow-er, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts." It is quite possible possi-ble that Zerubbabel thought of undertaking un-dertaking a rebellion against Babylon, Baby-lon, but he was warned of such and urged to rely upon the spiritual spirit-ual resources at his command. So should we, in our church-building enterprises and else consecrate our possessions unto God and depend de-pend upon him to use them, through us, in his kingdom. |
