land near Jen Jen- Jensen sen Utah as Dinosaur Nation Nation- National al Monument This has become the world famed Quarry section of a subsequently enlarged scenic Ic river canyon area embracing square miles of the Yampa I and Green River canyons and andI I surrounding highlands Official visitor counts were not begun until 1937 when persons visited the Quarry area Since then some visit visit- Federal land as Dino- Dino Dinosaur National Monument This acreage was the site of the large lar- lar large ge deposit of fossil dinosaur bones which was originally dis- dis discovered discovered covered by Earl Douglass of the Carnegie Museum on August 17 1909 FOLLOWING the discovery of the deposit the Carnegie Mu- Mu Museum Museum seum under permit from the government excavated and re- re removed removed moved fossil bone from the qu- qu quarry quarry arry until they decided to dis- dis discontinue discontinue continue their operations in De- De December December cember 1922 During this time po pounds of dinosaur bones were removed moved from the quarry hauled by wagon to Watson Utah and shipped by rail rall to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania This wealth of specimens contained 23 mount mount- mountable able skeletons as well as many isolated bones and short strings of vertebrae The United States National Museum md and the Uni Uni- University of Utah also removed mat material rial from the quarry Today skeletons from the qu- qu quarry cu arty arry can be seen in the United States National Museum Princeton eton University University of Nebraska Denver Museum and anda a few museums in Europe as aswell aswell well as the Carnegie Museum THE MONUMENT was en- en enlarged enlarged in 1938 to include the rug rug- rugged ged and scenic canyon country of the Green and Yampa rivers and after subsequent boundary adjustments the current size is nearly square miles After the excavation work carl carried ed on by the museum at atthe atthe the quarry was discontinued the
