Show Grazing Study On Diamond Mt Being Evaluated Various grazing systems are presently being evaluated to see which would be most effective on Diamond Mountain i Participating in the study are various cattlemen and range managers from Ashley Nation al Forest Studies also are being conduct ed on native and range range lands Seven fenced grazing units have been used to determine the relative efficiency of certain systems 1 Early heavy grazing on seeded range every other year 2 Early heavy plus light fight sum mer grazing on native range every other year 3 Moderate summer grazing on native range where late sum mer grazing is followed by early summer grazing the next year and the succeeding year with rest during the following year IN 1957 1951 A study plan was out lined by Dr Weldon Shephard and Dr Odell Julander range research specialists from the ex station Later the plan was presented to Thomas Sevy district ranger with the Forest Service and Hugh W Colton local cattleman and vice president of the Nation al Cattlemen's Dr William Laycock and Paul Conrad Forest Service range specialists compiled the results In 1959 a preliminary survey of the 1100 acres on the allot ment was made and a tion use pattern of the area by cattle was determined and map ped Later permanent study plots types were mapped and forage production on each unit was de THIS WILL show how much and what kinds of vegetation each of the fenced units was pro how the forage was used and what was the livestock carrying capacity in each fenc fenced ed unit The rangers and cattlemen have worked together in build ing fences developing water sources md and constructing and fences The item likely of greatest interest to the cattle raisers is the cattle weighing program Selected cows steers heifers and calves are weighed when they enter in June in July when they are moved and at the end of the grazing season GAINS OR LOSSES in weights of cattle grazing under the dif di ferent systems of managements determine the system which is the most effective Cattle rates have now been obtained for the past four years other years of study may be needed before final con elusions can be made |
