Show bo L I 1 ce by J P MAY president last august the people of our two counties which forms the utah sector of the uintah basin proved thai that they could got together they also proved that they could enjoy themselves in a general gathering and that they could accomplish something thus combining business and pleasure and receiving much benefit from the association of the many other people who were all tor for the same purpose it seemed very difficult at the outset plans were merely dreams but nith ith the backing of such men as gross woolf smith colton peterson cheney chener gibson and others something tangible was assured I 1 was never ln in a public movement which in the be seemed so far away so dreamy it I 1 may use the word I 1 dont believe that thal after our met and even after our second meeting that anybody really thieves thieved Thi eved we could do what wo we said we were going to do but it all worked out again proving what may be done by hard work and the union of forces we had the very liberal support of the agricultural college and later the U of U and the B D Y T U both came into the move with genuine optimism resulting in a faculty of 36 35 exports experts men and women choe chos en because of their genius and leadership it was indeed a unique gathering unusual even grotesque it may bo he well to ask was it worth the efforts what did it accomplish wo we may ask a third question which answers to the first two questions will decide that Is shall we do it again it was worth all the timo time and money spent and a hundred times more there was a dally daily attendance of from three to six thousand men and women of at this interior country possibly a third of the number camped in tents around the campus each day the number increased but equally as great as the growing interest was the enthusiasm which also increased with this enthusiasm thusia sm there was more and more optimism from these two was plainly seen another result viz every one was inore satisfied that he lived in tho uintah basin and as a corollary coro llory he be was more resolved to stay in the uintah basin make it 41 hia his homo home make a better home to the men who did the hard work about ten to fifteen optimists this result was ample pay for tho the time and labor spent the above has answered the first two questions and in doing so it has justified an affirmative answer to tho the third one yes we should do it again you bet not I 1 can la Is a good gool slogan whether H C smith invented it or whether he dreamed it or whether ho he borro borrowed mod it from some other dreamer makes no difference we were all dreamers when we started but we realized nearly all we started out to accomplish it Is hoped that in 1924 the people will take hold of at the problem with much assurance with more union and with this attitude attl tudo generally noted ts 0 o should be able to have a gathering on the old fort lucheso campus which will be still greater more easily conducted and classes and divisions dt better arranged and supervised giving better net not results rei ulta this is vitally necessary tor for our progress where on earth Is there a section of at country where a general gathering Is more beneficial where are a two counties bound up into one whole for present practical purposes the county line Is very secondary ond nry the tho big problems are tire these viz we want more mord determination more satisfied residents and we are getting them thein and wo we want more farmers and we are getting them and this IV VB B L C movement ato produces the results it is doing much more than that it Is generally con ceded that every farmer who attend od ed the convention was more satis fled tied v alth hia farm more cou contented tented to make thie thia his home and more determined to make it a better place placa in which to live than he was before he went to tho the three day meeting this Is likely the biggest resultant result resul tAnd and it Is quite likely that in 1924 we shall have the liberal support of colorado and possibly price will wim take genuine interest in it big business next time will take more notice of it certain vital points of our first arst attempt which may haqq hav escaped the consideration of many people it may bo be well to mention there were no gambling devices no games of chance and little or no intoci cants canto the indian met with vath the white man and although the indian was there with his most gorgeous costume and did not sabe the white mans marxs ways ho he was in and really played an important part it was unique to see indian women at attending classes dealing with physiology motherhood homo home economics and kindred subjects it was interesting to see many full bloods ical indian characters quietly observing and drinking in a certain amount of the information enthusiasm and optimism therefore wo we helped not only the white man but we stimulated our aboriginal friends it would be unfortunate indeed if we should not continue this wonderful event we must do it we shall do it what say you boat |
