pinned some pictures on the wall in i our room some of them were hung out in the hall so all the rest of the school could see dee them we made pictures and stencil cut outs we used razor blades to cut them out SCIENCE Ra malayne layne huber ath grade grad in n science the other day we wanted to sw what chalk would do UE it we put it if in vinegar some of the children brought dulk chalk and vinegar at science time we had the experiment first we scraped a little bit of chalk off and put it in some vinegar it fiz zed ced a little but not very long xe we then put a larger piece of chalk in the vinegar to watch As action this experiment proved that limestone put in vinegar or acid causes a chemical reaction MAPS AND GLOBES karla loo le ft judy horrocks horrock fifth grado grade TA in our room at school we are studying about maps we studied about rainfall historical land used use political graphic relief population products and minerals maps we also are drawing maps of lapoint three children are drawing tUsto historical maps two children are drawing the route of the school bus four children are drawing one part of the town two children are drawing the other part of town the other children are drawing maps of the entire valley we also have studied about globes wie we learned that south couth is at the bottom north is at the he top east is at the right fad ad west is at the left of the map and globes i we have fun in our room studying maps OUR WEATHER kur karr D jenkins fifth and sixth grados grades in lapoint we are having very good weather at school we can still go outside MAESER SCHOOL by 87 randy bandy collel Col letl sib grade the maeser school has school elections twice a year each time we elect a president vice president secretary chief of patrolman and patrolmen 4 we will have school elections next week the oung outgoing officers are ilene mcconkie kie president bonnie jo anderson vice president charles snell secretary sherma oaks chief patrolman ralph huber joe hall susan cook and randy collett patrolmen tr 1 these officers have done a good job in their work we want to see if we can elect just as good officers next week several sixth graders have writt written ert articles about the very interesting things they are studying in science CHARCOAL charcoal is almost pure carbon yet charcoal is nothing but wood with a few elements removed it if you try the following experiment you can make charcoal you will need a can with a tight fitting lid some wood and a source of heat beat as a hot plate gas burner etc punch a hole in the top of the can put the wood in the can ar and to put the lid on put it on the heat beat when the can is hot white smoke will pour out of the hole put a lighted match up to therole the hole and it win will ignite i 4 when you yon cannot light the gas coming from the hole take it off the heat beat allow to tool cool and take the lid oft off and you will have charcoal light the charcoal and it will burn bum white with almost no smoke or fumes Th ewhite the white gases tat came out of the hole were oxygen and hydrogen charles Chi tries snell write about stiver silver sulfide ti i silver sulfide Is a compound which Is made up of 2 atoms of silver and I 1 aton atom of sulfur pure silver is shinny HAW pure sulfide it is yellow SWa b silver sulfide Is a lot dlf dif spent kant it is in a dull black sil v dmd silver sulfide are dif asat in another its a so good aea tor of mihan r sulfide ww bwy Is a door co bondt d T aimo ver sulfide tastes sliver cuver does doea not silver sulfide Is a black brown solid susan cook says that removing silver sulfide that forms forma on silverware is an interesting te experiment peri ment the only thing needed to perform this experiment la is some tarnished silverware an aluminum pan baking soda coda and some salt after we poured two quarts of water in the pan and put the other ingredients in we put it over a gas burner and brought it to a boll boil then we turned the heat off next we put the silverware in the pan so that all the silver was covered by the solution A few minutes later we removed the silver from the pan and rinsed it in clear water and dried it with a soft cloth the tarnish was all gone the sulfur in the tarnish silver sulfide sul tide was removed from the silverware and was attracted to the aluminum pan IRON AND STEEL howard merrell ath grade grad the raw materials for iron and steel are iron ore coal and limestone the principal raw materials for making iron and steel are found in many states fortunately this country has large supplies of these materials this has made it possible PO isible for the united states to be the largest steel producer in the world there Is an open pit mine located ton the me range in minnesota it is the largest man made hole in the world it is 3 miles long and I 1 mile wide it is called an open lies so close to the surface of the earth that the ore can be pit mine because the iron ore scooped up by power shovels the shovels load the ore into railroad cars which carry it to the ore docks on lake superior huge ore boats twice as long as a football field carry the iron ore down the great lakes for use in the steel mills chutes are lowered from storage bins above the water and the ore now flows down filling the boat most coal Is mined deep in the ground there is a machine that cuts a slice 8 feet deep into the coal next the block is blasted loose coal as it comes from the earth cannot be used in the iron making furnace it first must be made into coke coke is made by heating coal in special ovens limestone la is obtained in suar iress great chunks are blasted loose and put into railroad cars to be taken to the mill the first step in making steel is to change the iron ore into molten iron in the blast furnace little cars called skip cars go up the track w with ith loads of iron ore coke and limes limestone tone and dumps them in the furnace to make steel in the bessemer converter molten iron is first charged into its mouth then a powerful blast of hot air is blown into the furnace 10 to 15 minutes the impurities are burned out of the iron and it has hag become steel the converter coave arter is ia tipped forward and the hot steel runs into a big ladle the open hearth furnace la Is 3 feet beet deep ZD 20 feet wide and 50 feet long A charging machine dumps a load of material into the furnace after 8 to 12 hours the steel la is ready to be run into a ladle from a we hole at the back of the furnace steel wrap scrap Is put in the electric furnace through a do door orTher there are three large la rge rods called electrodes in the center powerful electric currents shoot down through the electrodes and lump jump across the wrap scrap like flashes of artificial lightning the electric flames aro are very hot and melt the wrap scrap into fresh steel molten alloy steel is poured from an electric furnace into a ladle I 1 pouring steel from an electric or open hearth furnace is called tapping the Jur furnace nace steel I 1 4 poured into great molds frond a huge ladle held by an electric crane the steel must be heated again in a soaking pit at about 2000 degrees fahrenheit the white hot steel Is rolled into blooms billits and slabs the blooms are made into railroad tracks and beams the billets are ina made de into rods and bars and the slabs are made into plate sheet and strip steel MAPLES SCHOOL by br judy herman hannan ft claudia Goof goodrich tich sib grade in school we am studying about the different states the group we vie are am
