Show study urged on minimum wage F for or parm farm labor secretary of labor james P mitchell Ml has sent to the congress a report on a study of the problems of applying a minimum wage to farm labor made earlier in the year an identical letter sent to vice president richard nixon senator lister hill chairman of the senate labor committee speaker of the house sam rayburn and congressman adam clayton powell of the house education and labor committee ee secretary mitchell Ml said that he was convinced that the platter matter of a minimum wage in agrical agriculture ture warrants a serious and thorough exploration by the congress ile he said he hoped the study would be useful to the con gress in its deliberations in releasing the letters the secretary said that in his opinion there is a clearly de rated need for adequate and immediate relief for the farm workers of this country no now v denied abe the protection of fast of our great social welfare legislation whose aver age income now falls fails to pro vide them with a level of living commensurate with their contribution to our society eo clety A minimum wage for agriculture ri la Is in my opinion both I 1 feasible and desirable and need only apply to those large farms who employ most of the hired farm labor to I 1 be effective J hope that the congress will VM act in thur this im area and provide ade quate minimum wage protection for those millions of americans who produce the good food and fiber this coun country try consumes |
