Show FREE homesteads petition to be circulated asking congress to allow settlers to pro prove ve up without actual resl residence during 1908 A petition is to be presented to the united states congress asking that the homesteaders who have made loca tiona on the former ustah indian reservation er and those who are yet to make such locations be received rele ived from fro n the actual ua I 1 fourteen months reside roside u upon same during the year and i that t patents be issued under the samo conditions that they would be issued if the homesteaders inside there as pr prescribe escrib ed by law at the present ti time me united states senator henry M teller of colorado b has as introduced breso lution lotion in the sanate providing that the annual assessments on mining cl claims airris be waived for the years 1907 1007 and 1908 and there is ia every reason to believe that it will pass both branches of congress this resolution was introduced in order to relieve the mining men of the west during the money stringency if congress does not act favorably there are hundreds of prospectors who will wil I 1 lose allor all or most all the claims they have located during the panic of 1893 there was such a resolution passed for the benefit of tho the homesteaders of oklahoma and there is no doubt but that many of them were saved from destitution and want in this thia connection william oneil has sont sent an interesting communication to the express as follows now that congress is in session and with hearts full of the good they want to do let them in this hour of need follow the good work of senator tellers bill relieving the mining men and prospectors spec tors of assessments for the next year would it not be a good thing to go 90 still further and let our hearts go out to the struggling settlers on the uintah reservation who now are facing the winter months without hay or grain for their teams or supplies for themselves would it not be a generous thing for the greatest government on earth to do for the citizens who are located on the lands mentioned to say illy to them that they shall not be required to stay on their homesteads during the year bear 1903 1908 but that they fa say y have their farms and be allowed to make a living and send their children to school in more congenial parts now that the business of the country is to say bay the tha least in a very unsettled condition and retrenchments retrench ments along all lines seems to be the watchword why leave those poor settlers like a shorn lamb to the ravishes of the wintry blasts any more than the mining man or the prospector let a petition be gotten up and signed by all citizens having the interest of t the he people at heart those living on the reservation will do a great deal for you they will by their industry bring the valuation of the lands the government has so generously given them up from a mere trifle to 50 and in many cases to per acre they have so far worked wonders and will still go on in the grand march of redemption let other papers tak take e up the matter and let our senators smoot and sutherland and congressman howell place the good work before congress and the result will be in line with the above request |
