Show MIDVALE U.S. MINE PLANT TO NOTE50THYEAR An open house observing the fiftieth anniversary of the opening open-ing of the Midvale plant of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, at 1:30 p.m., W. C. Page, vice president and general manager of western operations, said Monday. Speakers during the open house, which will feature a tour of the plant and refreshments for invited guests, will include Gov. J. Bracken Lee, Henry J. Beckstead, mayor of Midvale; James A. Bateman, retired employe; em-ploye; C. A. Nelson, smelter superintendent, su-perintendent, and Mr. Page. Built originally as a copper smelter, the plant began operations opera-tions in 1902. It processed ore from the company's mines at Eureka and Bingham Canyon. Later development of lead ore bodies in the company's mines at Bingham Canyon led to the construction of lead smelting facilities fa-cilities at the site in 1904 with operations starting in 1905. Copper Cop-per smelting was discontinued in 1908. |
