Show Ve rnal boxers to compete in home bouts, March 13 Nine Iwxers from the Uintah Basin competed in the USA-ABF Slate Boxing Tournament. Friday and Saturday and those nine boxers plus additional Ixixers from Utah, Wyoming and Colorado will take part in Vernal Hoxing Club sponsored bouts, Saturday, Satur-day, March 13 at Uintah High School. The fights will begin at 7 p.m. However, the starting time may be changed. "It will be a 14 bout card at Uintah High School. We want to match our little guys, who have been training faithfully, but we also want to make sure we have some senior open fighters. We will try to feature Lucas and Andy Santio of Ft. Duchesne and Fugene Woody, Jensen, who is fighting for Dell's Club of Provo. If we have a lot of small kids, we will have them fight earlier. The proceeds will be used to run the Vernal Boxing Club and to purchase equipment." stated Steve Paulson of the Vernal Boxing Club. Lucas Santio, 147, novice, won his first two fights and lost to Lamont Green of the Marshall White club on a close decision in the semi-finals. Green went on to place first due to a decision over Edwin Lehi. "Santio had a bad first round and he took a standing eight count Santo turned it around and won the third round, but it just wasn't enough," said Paulson. Santio downed Marten Quevas of the Police Athletic I-cague on a decision and thumped Kevin Fullmer of West , Jordan on a wide decision. Friday. "Santio almost stopped Fullmer in the third round. Hosea went on to take first i and is a two-time champion. Hosea ' placed first when Joe Morast of Clearfield retired 2:49 of the second t round. I Woody. 125, open, was defeated by ( Douglas Darden of Leo's on a close I decision. "Woody "s leg tightened up in ' the third round." said Paulson. "He ( had a leg cramp and couldn't get unpacked." un-packed." Darden went on to place second. Larry Harrison, 10-11, 85 pounds, won a decision over Jamie Hernandez of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Club, for first place. "Harrison looked really good in winning first place," said Paulson. "John Culpepper, 80, 12-13, lost a loudly booed decision to Ronnie Montoya of the Police Athletic league," stated Paulson. "One of the judges came up to us and said that Culpepper shouldn't have lost. She had Culpepper taking all three rounds." The match with Montoya was a semifinal semi-final contest. Jay Burr, 10-11, 65 pounds, was decisioned by Frank Madrid of the Sheriff's Club in the championship match. Paulson remarked, Chris Crites, 10-11, 70 pounds, lost a decision to David Butterfield of West Jordan in a championship contest. The Vernal Boxing Club also had two unopposed- championns in Flynn Paulson, 10-11, 95 pounds and Benny Moore, 12-13, 90 pounds. |
