Show Tussiers tfrom flhree stsfes ?o crash lei VernaB tourney The top two teams in the 1980 3-A State Tournament, Uintah and Box Elder, as well as former state champions cham-pions from Wyoming, Rock Springs and Green River and top teams from Idaho, Preston and from Utah, Mountain View, Skyline and Viewmont will compete in the annual Vernal Tournament Tour-nament of Champions, Jan. 9 and 10 at Uintah High School. The Utes are the defending champions. Uintah has a 4-0 dual meet record and has placed first in the Steamboat Springs Tournament and second in the Rock Springs Tournament. The Utes toppled Alta, 37-22; Springville, 43-21; Rock Springs, 37 to 22 and Grand Junction Central, 48 to 14. The Utes most recent dual meets were on Dec. 17 against Grand Junction and against the defending state champions from Wyoming, Rock Springs on Dec. 11. Brett Brown, 98, pinned Brian Friel and Darrin Bailey, 132, pinned Rock Springs' Mark Mc-Culley. Mc-Culley. Pat Jenkins, 145, pinned Montoya and Randy Smuin, 155, pinned Myron O'Lexy of Rock Springs. Uintah acquired five pins in the win over Grand Junction Central. Brown, 98, pinned Steve Chavez of Central and Darrin Bailey pinned Derus Watson at 132 pounds. Allen Huber, 138, pinned Todd DuCray of Central and Randy Smuin pinned Blake Timmer of Grand Junction. Roger Griffin, Uintah's heavyweight, downed Brent Fontaraie with a pin. Other wrestlers who garnered wins for the Utes in the victory over Grand Junction Central were: Josh Reynolds, 6-1 over Scott Talley at 119; Jeff Good, 16-2, over Gerry Austin at 126; Pat Jenkins, 145, 11-0 over Bill Blair and Brent Hales, 167, 14-5 over Jerry Wells. Don Bohrer, Uintah and Mike Worley, Central, tied at 4-4. Reynolds, 119, blanked Stassinos, 11-0, in the win over Rock Springs and Jeff Good, 126, downed Dan Johnson, 14-7. Box Elder placed second to the Uintah Utes in the 1980 State Tournament. Tour-nament. The Bees tied Weber High School, 24-24, on Dec. 16 and toppled Woods Cross, 28 to 20. Jim Smoot, 98, pinned Jay Mackley of Weber in the first round and Brad Williams edged Songchol Pak of Weber, 6-2, at 105 pounds. Rich Lewis, Weber, 112, decisioned Todd Thompson, 10-5 and Bart Bushman, Weber, 119, blanked Mike Richards, 4-0. Daryl Marble, 126, pinned Rob Stauffer of Weber in the second round and Scott VanOrden of Weber, 132; downed Brook Denkers, 10-9. 10-9. Jon Rood, 138, Weber, nipped Bryan Williams, 6-4 and Burke Stone, Weber, edged Dwight Goodwin, 9-6 in the 145 pound contest. Chris Stanger of Box Elder pinned John Noble in the first round at 155 pounds and Eric Burton, Weber, pinned Brent Nichols, 167, in the first round. Steve Skrobiszewski, Box Elder, downed Dennis Singleton, 9-2, 185 and heavyweight, Brian Spencer, ' Weber, downed Shawn Gardner, 13-6. The results of the Box Elder win over Woods Cross were as follows: 98-Smoot pinned Craig Keller, Woods Cross, in the first round; 105-Williams, Box Elder, downed Mike Jordan, 11-10; 112-Thompson 112-Thompson decisioned Tracy Kirkham, Woods Cross, 3 0; 119-Richards, Box Elder, blanked Alan Anderson, 8-0; 126-Tod 126-Tod Schwendiman, Woods Cross, decisioned Marble, 18-5; 132-Denkers, Box Elder, decisioned Todd Gale, 2-1; 138-Richard Hatch, WC, decisioned Williams, 6-3; 145-Gordon Peck, WC, decisioned Goodwin, 11-5; 155-Gordon Kerr, pinned Stanger in the second round; 167-Nichols, Box Elder, decisioned Brad Pusey, 13-7; Skrobiszewski, Box Elder, pinned Scott Wilson in third round and heavyweight-Kyle heavyweight-Kyle Holgreen, WC, downed Gardner, 9-3. The Uintah Utes will battle the Spartans in Murray on Wednesday. Jan. 7 and will battle Union on the road, Wednesday, Jan. 14. The Utes will host Cyprus, Jan. 15 and Meeker, Jan. 16. Uintah will battle Green River, Wyo., on the road, Jan. 17 and will compete in the Green River Tournament on Jan. 23 and 24. Uintah will host Tooele on Jan. 28 and will take on Jordan on the road, Jan. 29. Uintah will battle Steamboat Springs on the road, Jan. 31 and will host the Region 7 tournament on Feb. 5.
