Show Union Cougars fall out of first place The Lehi Pioneers spoiled the Union Cougars' homecoming due to a 19-0 victory over the Roosevelt crew, Thursday. Lehi's defensive team scored two of the three touchdowns in the win over the Union. The setback by Union dropped the Cougars out of a first place tie with Morgan and places them in a tie for second place at 3-1. Lehi jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second quarter when Layne Cardon scored on a two-yard run. Tfie extra point kick was no good. The Pioneers increased their lead to 13-0 when John GeyeTman picked Up a fumble by the Cougars and marched 55 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick in the third quarter was good. The Pioneers' defensive team garnered gar-nered another touchdown when Layne Cardon intercepted a Union uerial and streaked 95 yards for a six pointer, which made the final score: Lehi, 1!) and Union, 0. "I;hi didn't move the ball at all except on the tirst touchdown drive. Union was inside their 20 yard line three or four times. We moved the ball real well in the middle of the field. We were inside the nine yard line, twice, but an interception stopped one drive and we lost the ball on downs the other time," stated Union coach, Jay Omer. Omer added, "John Brown had an exceptional night with runs of 10 to 20 yards. He played his best game ever. He looked really good. The team with t the breaks, which was Lehi, won the ball game. Our whole defensive team looked good." Union High School will battle Morgan on the road, Friday at 7 p.m. The Morgan crew is undefeated at 8-0 and is in first place in Region Nine at 4 0. Morgan is ranked number one in the Salt Lake Tribune's Class 2-A division and Union is numlx-r four. Union and Lehi are tied for second at 3-1. Wasatch and (Jraritsville arc tied for fourth place at 13, and Intermminlain is In sixth place at 0-4. Morgan blanked Wasatch, 14-0 and Grantsvillc thumped Intermountain, 15-0. The Cougars will compete in the 2-A State Tournament on November 3. The top three teams from Region Nine and the top five teams from Region Eight will take part in the meet. |
