Show 1 i a w a ao o rp E a 4 z SHAWN KING 4 Uintah darts back to first base during a attempt by Altamont Wildlife Resources Division wants public expression Dy By John Dickerson Conservation Officer West Vernal District Division personnel recently finished our yearly service in-service training sessions at Camp Williams and one of the highlights of the three day meetings was an address given by our new director Don Smith As you may know Smith is very interested in public input to our programs as shown by bythe bythe bythe the public forums he held throughout the State this year He indicated he felt these meetings were very helpful to him and he plans to continue this practice Besides public expression n ex expression the Director asked for ex expression x- x from within the Division so that new ideas and systems could be used to better advantage in wildlife management He said we are not dealing in an exact sc science science ence but one that deals in trends averages human inconsistencies in consistencies and a few biases of our own Mr Smith said he was not afraid of making mistakes or owning them so ko long as as our programs were thorough and objectively developed He stressed that mistakes should be on the conservative side in other words-on words the side of the resource since it is easier to correct under compensation rather than over compensation Another subject stressed was to provide a variety of outdoor opportunities for the sport sport- This means different types of hunts and seasons and the first hunt that pops into my mind is the elk hunt We know we are not satisfying everyone by the type of hunts we conduct and your input is certainly welcome We receive very little comment on how our big game hunts are conducted and Im I'm sure someone has an expressed opinion that would deserve consideration I cant can't think of another agency state or federal that is isso isso isso so sensitive to the wants and needs of the public as is our Division and if you have a good suggestion I can assure you it would not be sidetracked Director Smith is' is a great believer in keeping the public informed and his plans are to increase our Information and Education staff and to increase their output to the citizens and media The Legislature recently authorized us to reactivate our very popular semi-monthly semi magazine that was discontinued eight to ten years unfortunately ago-unfortunately there was no money appropriated for forit forit forit it so we will have to start some other program if the magazine is to be put out All in all Director Smith was optimistic about the future of Utah's wildlife but there are problems to be solved such as state versus federal jurisdiction tion the hunting anti-hunting movement and the activities of Utah's sportsmen illS HIS HIS TIERS HERS MIXED DOUBLES Team Standings W L Johnson-Calder Johnson 39 Jones Johnson-Jones 37 15 Martin Brigham-Martin 36 16 High Series Gene Bigelow Alan Trujillo Chuck Martin Lonnie Meek Linda Freerksen Kathy Calder Dusty Johnson High Games Gene Bigelow Alan Trujillo Chuck Martin Linda Freerksen Kathy Calder IBS Dusty Johnson |
