Show Western American Folk Culture confab Aug 5 1 1 5 The Fife Conference on Western American Folk Culture will wiIl be offered at Utah State Un University in Logan August 1 15 Aimed at developing understanding understanding understanding un un- un- un about unique loc local l culture and people and to preserve folk traditions and folkways the conference will b bof beof be beof of special interest teachers historians and thoSe thole generally interested in the American West CONFERENCE participants will wiIl both observe and participate participate participate par par- par par- in demon demon- and artisans artisans artisans ar ar- ar- ar will demonstrate folk crafts and in many cases those attending will wiIl actually participate participate participate par par- in the making of soap corn husk dolls and other folk crafts The conference faculty represents a wide range of talents and from expertise-from folk tales and legends to folk crafts and material folk culture Three of the eight faculty members include Wally Goddard Goddard Goddard God- God dard J J. J Barre and Austin Fife Wally Goddard a teacher in inthe inthe inthe the Uintah School District has instilled in his students a sense of pride in local cultural heritage by collecting folklore Since starting this program in 1975 three volumes of Tamarack have been produced This local publication contains folklore and material folk culture Goddard will demonstrate how he has involved involved involved in in- students in a special teachers and teaching section of the conference J J. J BARRE BARItE an alumnus of Utah State University now teaches at the University of Oregon where he has developed one of the best folklore and folk culture programs in the United States He is also a folklorist medieval scholar and lie He has been the editor of the Journal of American Folklore and regional editor of Western Folklore He has also recorded two albums of folk songs A Garland of American and The Traditional Ballad Austin and Alta Fife have made numerous field trips collecting lore reminiscences anecdotes and tales and material aspects of folk culture His interests have been wide and varied ranging from cowboy songs and lore dealing with settlement mining and railroading to the practical crafts and arts of the farm ranch and household The Fife Collection at Utah State is one of the largest holdings of original folklore in the American West Non credit fees are 65 and credit fees are 70 Both fees include the special workshop fee for admission to all U events of or ori the i Festival of the American West including the Great West Fair the Pageant the Great West Cookout and Sheepherders Sheepherder's Luncheon at the Jensen Historical Farm Three credits are available in English or History Registration should be completed by July 28 For registration forms and more morel information l contact the Utah State University Education Center at or BS ii W t i to s rMARIE r- r e 2 i r rM rMARIE M f V MARIE AND CARL of Los Angeles Calif touring louring Utah with a MIni bago Trailer Is built to be towed by small cars and motorcycles |
