you see you remember What you do you know With that in mind the dance component of the in Artists-in- School Program AIS promises to open students student's and teachers teacher's minds in Vernal when it begins in September The program funded through the National Endowment for the Arts begins its operation September 12 with Chuck Davis noted Dance Specialist from New York City THE TilE PROGRAM I is designed to increase growth among student in terms of self-identity self self-knowledge self self-discipline self and self By using body movement as the medium the artists hope to provide a away away away way for students to improve their academic skills Their goal is to make students more conscious of the space each lone one occupies and how to use their bodies within that space As the students become more self confident self self- about their bodies the more their attitude will improve The quality of education in any given area is difficult to define since it is not always measured by the standard forms of testing Education entails a large area not always related to how well you put something down on paper Quality education should also include methods to loaid aid a student in enhancing his self-image self relating to other human beings and improving his communicative communicative com com- skills v i UINTAH HIGH School became interested in the AIS program in October 1976 after they received a packet of information information information in in- formation about the program Their interest remained high due to the strong dance program that existed at the high school level The strong dance program combined with Neilson encouragement encouragement encouragement en en- to the administration administration ad ad- ministration to apply for the program The schools school's interest prompted Sterling Van Van- Utah AIS program coordinator to meet with the school administration to see how the program would be accepted here Following the meeting with the administration ad ministration Sterling encouraged en the school to apply which they did in January Prior to that application the school board authorized a expenditure which is required in order for a school to apply Following the schools school's application application application ap ap- in January the AIS MS program announced the acceptance acceptance ac ac- ac of that application in February resignation followed a series of meetings in which the district personnel met with the state stale coordinator and visited Pleasant Grove High School where the first dance component of the AIS was introduced into the state The district hired Teresa Murphy to replace as dance instructor at Uintah High School in June Immediately after her hiring she and three others from the district distri t Dr Bert Gividen Uintah High Principal Ted Taylor District Coordinator for AIS and Joyce Brown Elementary Coordinator Coordinator Coor Coor- flew to Connecticut for fora a week one-week workshop that als also included participating artists in inthe inthe inthe the AIS program DURING THE TilE week the district personnel worked on scheduling with the artists who will be establishing week two-week residencies here Additionally they attended classes and workshops themselves to gain a hand first-hand experience and knowledge as to what the concept is all about The the school district is varied with Naples Elementary School and Uintah High School forming the core schools from which the artists will operate With John Childs and Joyce Brown operating from Naples as its coordinators and Bert Gividen and Teresa Murphy working as coordinators from the high school the classes that will be involved with the program are varied and diverse Whites White's first grade class Camille Johns John's second grade class and Gayle Reids Reid's fifth grade class from Naples will be closely involved with the visiting artists while such classes at the high school level will be psychology art home economics and possibly some English and business classes It will also be available for all teachers in the district to attend teacher workshops that will be worth 3 hours credit through Utah State University There will be approximately eight to nine workshops held during six weeks of residencies throughout the 78 1977 school year Additionally Additionally Additionally Ad Ad- there will be follow follow- up workshops featuring guest movement specialists between residencies The community will also be given the opportunity to take advantage of the visiting ar There will be classes taught
