tremendous tre nien attendance nt at the eighty ali first st semiannual semi annual general conference of the church of jesus christ of I 1 latter day saints was fully realized not only was the attendance a record breaker but it was one of the most satisfactory conferences of the saints in many ways the sessions were held upon three days beginning thursday october C G and lasting over sunday there be being no session of the conference arday in III order that the visitors might have an opportunity to visit the state fair the first session of tho the confer I 1 ance allce was held thursday morning at 10 in the tabernacle and the afternoon session at 2 while in III the evening a coave convention antion or of tile the genealogical society was held in tile the assembly hall At members embers of the falth faith were present from all part of the world but espee tally lally from utah idaho and a number of the nearby near by colonies of the enorch on sunday the authorities of tile the church were sustained by the members of the church present there were no vacancies in the higher office of the church but tho the recent death of mrs airs Dath sheba IV smith one af of the best known and most highly respected women in the church had caused a vacancy in III the presidency of the relief society mrs airs emelene D B wells was chosen to succeed mrs smith music alusic was a prominent feature of tha ilie conference in addition to the great great organ and the famed tabernacle choir a number of the best soloists of the state were on the musical program although it had been feared president joseph F smith would not be abe to be present owing to recent illness he presided at the opening session of the conference having risen from a sick bed his speaking waa w is an effort however and several times during his talk of twenty minutes his voice broke and he was almost compelled to give way to his weakness wp akness after welcoming the saints andea and expressing his gratitude for such a large assemblage at the first meeting president smith talked on honor and truth he said there was never a time within his life when he had haa done anything dishonest nor had lie he ever broken falth faith he said ile he declared that lie he had been true to his god to his hia church and to his bis fellow men and that there was nothing in his life which would make him quail when he came before the almighty on tile the day of reckoning it was with a voice of challenge that president smith intended his honor and character against attack coming he said from men within the church it was not a defense of the church position upon any matter nor in general in regard to tile the poll cle tw of president smith there have been some attacks against the president by members of the church it is un der stood and these president Preside nl smith answered in no uncertain terms in spite of his weak condition the rest of tho the work of the opening session of the conference consisted ol of addresses by anelon cantlion H lund and john henry smith counsellors coun in the first presidency and four of the seven presidents of seventies there are 2000 missionaries in the field said president lund who are working diligently inthe cause lie ile urged attendance of cht children dren and membership in the various organizations for their benefit he said the juvenile courts were doing woodwork goo good work dwork and lif hf hoped the coming legislature would sustain them president john henry smith said the apostles of the church had never counseled the latter day saints to steal to lie to bear false witness against their neighbors they had always exhorted the people to pay their debts and to live the upright life lie he urged the extreme necessity of vir tue tile among young men as well as among the maidens of zion at the afternoon session the speakers were seymour B young rulon S wells joseph W lh and charles H hart elder hart talked upon the doctrines of the church and declared that the book of mormon was of divine origin elder lIcAl ln dwelt at some length upon education as a part of the work of tho the mormon church seymour B young declared that he was absolutely certain that joseph P F smith had never broken a pledge or a promise and that he believed in the president without qualification elder young said eald he had been in the tha stakes of st john and st joseph in arizona and reported that all was flourishing in that wonderful country rulon S wells declared that the childrez children of israel must cleanse and purify their hearts by practicing falth faith and repent ance for sin and as the spirit grows grown within them thenia they will receive the tha knowledge of the tha truth at the friday sessions of the confer ence the features were the tion alon of the unfair tactics used ty by enemies of the mormon church a warning against the voicing of accusations against the general authorities by members of the church counsel to live clean and upright lives tho the prophesy that the mormons cormons would yet sweep over the nation eastward in victory and a general invitation to gentiles to come com e to zion alon to receive tile tho faith following the system adopted artlie at the opening of the conference the first presidency epcy continued the roll of members st he first seven presidents of 0 seventies ties friday finished them and ca led upon five of the apostles during tile tho days session during the moi morning ning session J golden kimball kemball and brigham il II roberts both of the seventies made interesting addresses especially elder roberts who traced the history of the church and spoke for a more careful investigation of the mormon lormon baith by the he outside world rather than a gen aral criticism and ridicule without reason in addition to these two speakers the he conference members heard apos le ie joseph P F smith jr youngest of the quorum of twelve and apostle anthony W ivens in the morning session during the afternoon addresses were made by apostles david 0 alekay orson F whitney and george F richards it had been expected that some som e ot of the public questions would be taken up lip by the conference at the session which closed sunday but there was nothing in III this regard only matters deeply concerning the church being considered it Is estimated that people on sunday listened to addresses rn in the tabernacle assembly hall and in front of the buican of information building in the grounds and sustained all ot or th general authorities ot of the church by unanimous vote ju in the general officers of the tha church members of the organization who had come from many states made no change in IA the personnel as it existed at the last conference with the exception of mrs emmeline Emmel lne B wells who succeeded mrs airs bathsheba wilson smith as president of the relief society of all the world otherwise the general authorities of the church remain the
