Show VIRGINIA CONFERENCE. The following account of a recent conference held in Virginia is furnished us by Elder J. E. Carlisle, a missionary from Logan now laboring in that state: The Virginia Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints convened in the Chestnut Ridge schoolhouse, at 2 p. m. on Friday, July 21st. Elders present from Utah-John Morgan, President of the Southern States Mission; Wm. Asper, President of the Virginia Conference; Elders Jos. L. Townsend, Jesse M. Smith, Howard Coray, Samuel Porter, Joseph A. Smith, J. E. Carlisle and J. W. Bean. After the opening exercises President Asper made a few remarks concerning our meeting together in a conference capacity-the object being to transact such business as was necessary, to receive mutual instruction and to edify the people. Elder Jos. A. Smith realized the necessity of the Spirit of God in speaking, for no one could instruct or edify in the Gospel without it. He spoke of the need of understanding the laws of God and of putting them into practice. Elder J. W. Bean was thankful for the knowledge of the Gospel which he possessed, he knew it to be true, and referred to some of the principles of salvation. Singing. Benediction by President J. Morgan. |
