Show HYRUM. On Thursday last a team belonging to Mr. James Jones ran away, partially demolishing the wagon. Nobody hurt. The Presbyterian (or little church around the corner) church is nearing completion. The carpenter work is done, and is a credit to Messrs. Thoresen & Hokansen, builders, Hyrum. The plasterers are giving the building the finishing touches. The rock schoolhouse is nearly completed to the second story. Messrs. Nielsen and Roseberg, masons, will soon have their contract finished. The house will be a great improvement to the town. The plans were drawn by Mr. T. O. Angell, jun., Logan. Many new houses, barns and other improvements are being made; in fact, there is a building boom here. Our saw mills are burning out a splendid article of red and white pure lumber, and the planing mills are kept busy. The shingle mill is ready to start and soon we shall tell our children about log cabins as relics of the past. The first of this season's wheat was harvested to-day (31st ult.), on Mr. Frederick Olsen's farm. Mr. Isaac Stephens will cut another piece this week. Are these the first in the county? The trustees of Hyrum school district called a meeting for the purpose of voting on the rate per cent. of a tax to be assessed for finishing and furnishing the new schoolhouse, and for paying expenses of conducting schools for ensuing year. William Williams was elected chairman and C. T. Olsen secretary. The trustees asked for $1,750-$1,450 for the schoolhouse, and $300 for incidental expenses-which would require a tax of ?? per cent. A motion for that amount was made, but on balloting lost-yeas, 57, nays, 33. Afterwards a motion for ?? per cent was carried yeas, 61, nays 21. On Monday evening Henry Jensen, son of Hans Jensen, while playing with a toy pistol, shot himself in the fleshy part of the hand, causing an ugly wound. Dr. Grosbeck, of Logan, dressed the wound. On Tuesday, Joseph Christensen and a number of little boys were playing. All tried how many rocks they could hold in their mouths. The other children had six and Christensen tried seven, when one of them lodged in his throat. He turned black in the face and showed every sign of choking. He was taken to Logan for medical treatment, and the rock forced down his throat, thus saving his life. He is very low and will be some days recovering. |
