The proprietor of the Logan House now has a neat tobacco stand at his place. Willie Preston is now able to walk about the streets with the aid of crutches. Read the notice relating to a fish pole stolen from the Book Store on main street. We will have something particular to say next week about Lundberg & ?[Garits] ??. Fishing excursions to the neighboring canyons result in a large ?[accession]to the ?[bra?n] producing material of this town. Improvements at the Pioneer are still progressing. Another week's labor will make this the neatest establishment in Logan. On Monday last a smoke stack, piping and other ?[roquidtes] for a steam mill and a shaper for lumber were sent into Logan canyon for the U.O.M.& B. Co.[company]. Mr. D.R. Hamdreaux has already commenced work on the mammoth barn for D?? Reese. When completed this building will be the largest of the kind in northern Utah. A picnic party for the school children of Logan, is to be given at the Bowery this afternoon. Dancing, music, &c.[etc] will occupy the time. A very pleasant occasion is anticipated. Mr. ?[Bates], agent for the Kansas ?[Domological] Institution, has been indisposed for several days ?[back, last]but is now improving. He is receiving good care at the Cache Valley House. Daniel M., the Cache Valley horse is growing in favor. We understand that a wealthy stock-raiser of the north has made a proposition for his purchases and the matter is now pending. The vacancy in the board of directors of the U.O. Foundry Company-caused by the absence of C.H. Lundberg. ?[Leg.] was on Monday evening filled by the appointment of Col. [Colonel] Thos. [Thomas] E. Ricks. Mr. Gus. Lundberg is agent here for the Peter's Combination Lock, one of the finest and most curious results of mechanical skill ever brought to our notice. Call upon ?[him] and ?? the ?order. A sick little runaway occurred on Main Street Wednesday. If Mr. Ed. Newberry had not succeeded in checking the course of two ?[hefty] steeds, we might have had something serious to chronicle. H.H. Spencer Esq.{Esquire] representing the firm of David ?[Lecice] & Co.[Company] Ogden, was in town yesterday. He is taking orders for lumber and all kinds of building material. He stopped at the Cache Valley House. The custom of employing lady clerks in mercantile establishments is growing popular in Logan. Quite proper! For this reason, there is less ?? about the stores, and the sales are largely increased. Stolen from the front of the Book Store on Wednesday evening, a Bamboo fish pole. The name of the person who committed this there is known and if the pole is not returned he will be prosecuted and publicly exposed. Fine Archery is now the rage. J. P. Hammond is up to the times with a fine selection of Bows and Arrows. He sell Bows from 10 cts. [cents] to $3 each. Go to the Book Store and see them. Jel8-2 Thomas B. Cardon, Esq., come out with a new advertisement this week, announcing his business. He keeps in addition to the best stock of watches, jewelry, &c., in northern Utah, a fine stock of pictures and has a good photograph gallery. Fishing tackle a specialty. Two large and angry canines engaged in a ?[pilened] battle on Main street a day or two since. A large number of spectators gathered to see the fun; and these intelligent and humane individuals were gratified to see the stronger and more vicious dog of the two kill the weaker one. On Tuesday, a young man by the name of Neils Neilsen was arraigned before Judge Cranney and fined $5, for sprinkling water with a hose on the clerk at the post office. It is said that the end has not yet been reached and next seek we may have something more to publish with regard to the affair. To-night a leap year party is to be given in Logan hall, under the auspices of the school-teachers of this city. Misses Mattie Blair and Esther Leishman constitute the committee and Miss ?[Emma] Smith will act as floor manager. All the young men in town have been on their good behavior ever since they heard of the prospective event. John Boyle, Esq.; of Ogden stopped in Logan on Wednesday. He had just returned from a business trip to the terminus. Mr. Boyle is, today, the leading furniture dealer of Utah; and the people in this part of the country who wish to purchase at wholesale can not do better than to patronize him. While here he was called upon at the Cache Valley House by many of his friends. The superintendents of Sunday schools and leaders of choirs in this Stake of Zion with as many singers as can come, are requested to meet at 10 o'clock a.m., at the Logan Tabernacle, on the last Saturday of every month until further notice. Both morning and afternoon meetings will be held. By order of the authorities. These practices are in view of the jubilee which is expected to occur in September ?[next]. |
