Show A BUSINESS MAN saw a friend reading a French Testament on the ferry-boat, and desired to know when he found leisure to acquire the language. He said he one day remarked that he wasted a great deal of time on the cars? reading things he did not much care for, newspapers and trash, to pass the time, and concluded he would put it to better use. He bought a pocket manual of French, and within three years, in the time spent on cars and stages, had taught himself the language and read several books. No sooner said than the example took. The friend went to Luggat's[?], bought a French hand book, and learned his columns of French words before dinner, resolved to make something out of a good deal of time, before spent in newspaper skimming and idle chatting. Some more people might thus profit in getting the interest of their time in a similar way. |
